my dad wants me to build him a computer for his office. he's not necessarily on a tight budget, but he's only going to be using it for web browsing and email, and a bit of data redundancy (mirror raid)

anyone got any mobo/cpu reccomendations? was thinking about the 7750 and a micro atx raid 0/1 capable mobo.

i just played around a bit with a spreadsheet trying to come up with a price/performance rating on AMDs current cpu,s (and thus trying to predict the price for the new phenoms)

in whatever formula i dreamed up, the 7750 is always the best bang for the buck (i ended up with a basic cores*ghz/price with price slightly amplified when the cpu has little cache/core, which doesnt hit the 7750 all that hard with its 2mb). I run one myself, and it does all i want, i think a system based on a 7750 will be sufficient for years. The only downside i can see is the power use, since it draws a bit more then older X2s and intels low end stuff

for basic office duties, a 7750 and a 760G mATX board will be a very nice combo, i'd say most mobos would support raid 1 (even an old s754 asrock mATX i used did it), so mirroring will be easy too

Well you can't really just # of cores*clock speed, but either way, the X2 7750 is still a good option (or the 7850 if you want another 100MHz)...

What exactly *is* your budget?

On the intel side of things you could look into a E5200 for around the same price.

The great thing about AMD is that you can get a decent Asus or Gigabyte mobo with Raid support and a AMD/gf8 chipset for cheaper, vs having to pay $100 minimum to get a intel chipset + Raid.

Picking what you want in this price range really matters whether
1) Is power consumption / heat output a concern?
2) Do you just need performance for cheapest?
3) Rather pay a little more of more performance?

For 1), the 4850e/5050e are more $ then cheaper chips yet slower
For 2), 2.9GHz and 2x512k L2 vs 2.8GHz and 2x512k L2 + 2MB L3... it's a toss up but the prices are different
For 3) IMHO, the ones with the L3 are faster, so...

Unless you can pay $120 zone for CPU, then you can look at the X3 710 (2.6GHz tricore), but I'd doubt he'd need it for those tasks.

EDIT: Little something I through together on newegg, no idea what kind of hard drives you want. The case is good quality, comes with a good PSU, one external and one internal 3.5 slots, so just enough for two hard drives.

i'm well aware of that, my formulas were just some simple guestimating work to give me a rough estimate on performance/buck. I know it wouldnt be any good comparing a 7750 to a 955, but i was just interested in how X4s scaled pricewise Vs performance wise. Then it got a bit out of hand, and i ended up with all current, and all known future phenoms in a spreadsheet.

The main issue with my formula's is cache and architecture differences between agena and deneb.

my point though, was just that the 7750 is an excellent CPU, it doesnt perform up there with the best, but its a tough little chip, and doesnt cost all that much.

Can't wait for the new Phenom II based X2's... no idea when they're coming out though.

Here's a spreadsheet I've been updating for awhile. I try to compare the best chips in each of the competing price points, because both sides are pretty good at having similar chips at similar prices.

those intrique me too, i'm really curious what 6mb l3 cache will do on a dual core, all that cache should allow each core to really stretch its legs, and 45nm duallies should be nice chips to play with too :)

according to my own price/performance spreadsheet, i'm expecting the 3.0 dual core to cost about 85-90 euros, anymore then that and the lower end X3's will eat their market, i'm thinking it will drop below 80 euros soon enough.. keep in mind though that i just took current cpu's and inter/extrapolated a bit, i would personally hope for a small pricedrop on top of that, but im not holding my breath :), the stuff AMD has coming is already quite brilliant, take the 45w quad core athlon IIs for instance :) they wont compete clock for clock, but a sub $100 quad is gonna be awesome (besides, i've seen die estimates, seems like the athlon IIs use a l3-less die, so low power and awesome clocking)

as for releases, i did see a 'next month' float around in a news article, but that doesnt say all that much
 
If you watch Fry's, they've been doing combo's of 7750 with a 760G motherboard which are great little inexpensive boards with the onboard Radeon 3000/3200 for like $99.
 
Why buy an AMD 7850BE when you can save a few bucks and get a AMD 7750BE and bump the multiplier another .5 to get that 100MHz?
 
I would go for a 790GX/SB750 AM2 DDR2 mobo with however much ddr2 800/1066 you want to throw in, your choice if you think saving a few bucks is worth slower ram. Then any AM2/+ cpu of your choosing. Keep in mind phenom 2 is much faster than phenom 1, but a fast X2 for under a hundred will do the chick.
The 790GX has integrated HD3300 graphics w/128mb ddr3 video memory, so you get vista at full acceleration and it can do a game if ever needed. Considering the board I recommend is only 130 it's an awesome bargain.

I would say if the BE-2400 was still for sale between $25-30 to just get that, because thats all you really need...
 
Is the onboard video on the cheap 760G boards dx10?
If so definitely go with that over 790gx as the extra speed/features are not needed.
I can use the 760g for custie pc's too but only if its dx10
 
It's the exact same onboard as the 780G (3200) and 790GX (3300) , it's just clocked lower without sideport, though on my 760G it's actually a 3200 not a "3000" as it's supposed to be. The specs say 3000 but I swear I looked at it in AOD and it was identical to my 3200 on my 780G board.
