Morning/Evening peeps. What with all the hype of the forthcomming Doom3 i've been thinking its time to retire me little Radeon 8500 to my server PC in flavor of something a bit newer.

The main thing im trying to figure out is this: With all these new video cards comming out, what would be a good bang for the buck when it comes to a quality VID card for anywhere from 150-200$? I dont need all the quality settings and my resolution MAXED to enjoy a game,but i dont want my PC's video card powered by a donkey and cart either.

Too much to choose from and i've been out of the gaming loop so long im not sure what to look for anymore.

I know my local frys is selling 9800pro (without a rebate) at $169 now. Best deal by far. Do some searching and find a cheap 9800pro. YOU CAN FIND IT CHEAPER THEN $200.

I really don't think there's a better deal at $150-200 price point than the 9800 Pro.

The FX series, except for the 5900 obviously, is a wash. So its either the 5900 or the 9800 Pro--I'd go with the 9800, as regular 5900's are a bit harder to find now--the XT's are more mainstream now. Additionally, b/c some 9800Pros can very easily be OCed to XT speeds (of course the difference of having only 128MB memory), the 9800Pro (when found @ $170) represents an even greater value.

And of course, the fact that the 5900 is more power hungry than the 9800Pro--so if you have a crappy PSU, you might even get away with running it.
 
The 9800pro was actually what i was looking at getting. But i wasnt sure if i should get that or like an x600 XT.
 
Hehe, so much feedback. I appreciate everyones advice so far, dont want to buy a craptacular card with what little $$$ i do have.

the x600 XT is a pci-express-only equivilent of the 9600 (xt ?), so there's no real reason to get it for your system, which i assume uses agp. i'd go with the 9800 pro or the FX 5900, and probably the former.
