Bandwidth speed test question

I have Optimum Online Boost service. I have an average of 25MB/sec when I test my connection using a few websites. However, when I connect my wireless router (3 year old Netgear 802.11g), my connection speed drops to under 10MB/sec when doing the same tests.

Do you have any idea why this will be happening? Should I replace my wireless router with a newer one, like 802.11n?

I'll assume that its Mbps (megabit per second) as opposed to MBps (megabyte per second)

'G' APs will max out at 20-25 Mbps, and any interference will quickly drop the speed. Make sure that you are on an empty channel (make sure neighbors aren't using same channel) and remember that there's only 3 real channels for use - 1, 6, and 11. Maybe you're too far from the AP. Maybe you're too close. Try changing the power output of your wireless client (most laptops that I've seen set the wireless power to low, which reduces your range).

'N' will deal w/ interference better, as well as net you better throughput.

Before upgrading to N, make sure that you've optimized your 'g' connection (kill interference) and turn on speedboost/linkboost/turbo on both the client and the AP if you have it (it'll bind 2 channels together for potentially double the speed). If you go w/ 'N', make sure you get an offical 'N' device and not a pre-N, which isn't guaranteed to work w/ other pre-N devices from other companies.

Well, what information do you mean? I think that all of my info applies to wireless (besides MBps/Mbps).

Wired will be far more efficient, and run at 85-90Mbps, as long as all variables are optimal (source computer speed, destination computer speed, switch quality, etc.)

WIRED:

Router: Netgear 802.11g router.

PC: New core2duo 2g PC winxp pro

Cable Modem: Optimum online

PC to Cable modem = Online speeds of 25Mbps +

PC to Router to cable Modem = Online speeds under 10 Mbps
