Bamboo PC Is Eco-Friendly

Check out the Eco Book from ASUS that has a case made of laminated bamboo strips. ASUS is on a roll lately with the Eee PCs, now this. Makes you wonder what is next.

Harvesting bamboo, an abundant, flexible, durable and fast-growing grass, is unlikely to harm the environment as processing wood from trees might, Asustek said, although glues and laminates for shaping and fortifying the material sometimes contain toxins.

Looks really nice, but how sturdy is it, and what happens when it gets hot?

yea it certainly does look nice, but i'd be worried about it reaching flash point when running things requiring high processor usage :D

That it a nice looking case. I am pretty sure that bamboo is near the top for heat tolerance when it comes to wood. If nothing else it turns a nice shade of brown when toasted right. With some insufficient cooling you could get a nice component layout transferred through the bottom of the case.

the case is not the problem when looking at a computer in ecological terms. its all the nasties on the silicon.

That makes perfect sense! Think of all the ecological damage caused by the harvesting of other laptop wood!

Have I missed something lately?

Well they are saying that bamboo is not as harmful as other woods, so people won't attack them for using wood and not plastic/metal.

Exactly...

The case is made of plastic already, and they are adding wood to this plastic. Seems to me that it would have been more eco friendly if they didn't put bamboo on it in the first place.

I certainly do like the way it looks! And it's unique for a commercial machine.

They chose bamboo because of it's rapid growth property. Bamboo grows fast and can be replendish in almost no time.

Any other trees would take years and years to grow.

great.. now not only do we have to worry about software bugs.. but termites as well.. :D:p

and it take almost nothing to laminate bamboo... high pressure alown will make it stick together. if there was no/minimal plastic substraight, then its a great idea.. but if they just layed bamboo over the plastic (it looks like this is what they did) then they have done nothing except harvest some bamboo.. (its a freaking weed any way.. go ahead.. plant some bamboo infront for a bedroom window for a screen.. and in 5 years try and get rid of it... not fun.)

i do agree, it looks pretty slick.. and at least they have the grains faceing the right way on the wrist rests, if it seperates or shatters, you wont get splinters embedded in your wrists..

It really looks good, but to say that a wood laminate is environmentally friendly is stupid in the extreme.

Better to simply say, "Here is an awesome bamboo laminate PC!"

Anyone want to bet the bamboo laminate is about 1mm thick and is glued onto the PLASTIC notebook shell? Someone take one of those chassis apart and look at it from behind. Tell me what you see. I'll bet the farm you see PLASTIC.

Hmmm... I would venture to guess that their proceses and their other components may be also eco friendly.

Eitherway, how much does this badboy cost... that looks very nice.

:cool:DUDES IT'S A WOODY FOR LAPTOPS!!!

AOL has announced a partnership to deliver the Eee PC in a case created from old AOL CDs... which are also in near infinite supply. Nice to see people thinking about the environment.

Aw, that's cute.
I don't even own a laptop anything `cept the top of the lap on my ample thighs hahaha! :D

Who is completely technologically inept?!
THIS GIRL!
Ok i can work a PC, but anything after that OH MY!
I don't even own a cell phone, OY!

Your post and pic is so silly.:eek:

Reminds this old groover of Cheech & Chong's '72 Album BIG BAMBU. Somewhere in there is probably a pretty good joke, but if I was smart enough to think of one, I'd be on stike at this time anyway. :)

Screw this wood crap. I want a clear laptop like the on in the movie Hackers. They are so ridiculously hard to find. I haven't ran across one in years.

Find? This is Spar... er [H]! Go to home depot or Ace or Lowes, buy some epoxy and make your own :p

Never saw the movie. The clear ones I've seen have been iBooks (I think that was the right model, not to up to date on Apple junk). The ones made with clear plastic that is painted white on the inside. Remove paint and you have a clear laptop.
