When asked about the rumored $50 billion deal to buy Yahoo, Steve Ballmer said his company normally doesn’t make large acquisitions like that but wouldn't rule out the possibility.

Ballmer was asked about the acquisition rumor, at least indirectly, during an interview before an audience at the Software 2007 conference in Santa Clara, California. Microsoft never discusses potential acquisitions, Ballmer said, but added, "We have not, by default done a lot of big acquisitions ... but we wouldn't rule it out."

Smart

And Yahoo isn't worth $50bil.

No you are right. It's worth more than that.

According to Alexa, Yahoo is still the most top visited site. Mix it in with their powerful shopping area, hosting divisions, marketing divisions, and thier search engine, you are dealing with a power house. Not to mention revenue generated from the financial markets, real estate, and auctions, mix one of the biggest news sources in there too.

The site recieves 25% of all global internet users, not a high price to pay for that.

Jesus christ, $50 billion. Even if it's "worth" that much, or more, it won't exactly make back the money overnight. Guess it's more about owning everything, anyway.
