Bad Virus?

Ok, so i was just on my comp watching a film, my comp locked up so i restarted it. But now only my master hard drive is showing up, my cd drives arnt working and there not showing up in device manager, most of my programs are giving me error messages when i go to launch them and my sounds not working at all.

Anyone know whats caused this?

and how can i get my cd drives to work so i reinstall windows?

Not working or showing up in windows doesn't necessarily mean you won't be able to install windows. Set your BIOS to boot from your CD-ROM drive and see if you can boot from your XP CD. If you can then try doing a repair instead of a re-install. Your optical drives should show up on the same BIOS menu that lists your hard drives.

Good call.

Yeah, just throw the WinXP CD in the drive and reboot. See what happens.
 
nope i put my cd in a booted up and nothing happens just loads windows staright away, and cd drive is the first thing to boot up
 
It's a hardware problem then. If it were a virus, it would only affect the drive once you were in Windows.

You've got either:

A: A bad IDE/SATA cable
B: A bad CDROM
C: A bad IDE/SATA port
D: A loose IDE/SATA cable

People are too quick to blame viruses for hardware going bad. I'm sure there ARE viruses out there that can do that, but I am unaware of any.
 
i just unplugged and pluged back in all the cables for the cd drives, on of the drives is showing up in bios, but not in device manager
 
Are the 2 cdrom drives on the same ide chain? If so unplug each one and then set one as master and do not connect the other drive and see if that shows up.
