Just installed a Scythe Susanoo (don't laugh, have a mesh sidepanel and can actually use it :p) to replace my Core Contact Freezer, and for some reason my temps went up about 5 degree, even though the Scythe should be a better cooler! Not only that but under both coolers the cpu would be over 90 at load! Are these safe temperatures and how can I get the thing to run cooler? Running at 4GHZ btw. Thanks in advance!
 
90 degrees Celsius on fullload is too high.What's your CPU then?

And the Susanoo is not a great cooler,just meh.
 
Yeah but that it would be better then a Core Contact Freezer based on the reviews. :/ Cpu is a 920. Thinking about lapping it for better temps, but what kind of gain could I expect?
 
Lapping will only help if the surfaces of the heat sink and cpu are not flat and thus are not making good contact. In my case, neither the cpu nor the heat sink were perfectly flat, but lapping did not make any difference whatsoever. Either way, for most people, lapping only yields 2-3 degrees improvement. If you are over 90C at load, lapping is unlikely to fix the problem.
 
Would an enclosed water cooling solution like an H70 help? I'll do anything to keep my i7 from turning into a mini chernobyl...
 
What speed and voltage are you running the CPU at? Is your mounting solid? Have you double checked that your fans are moving air through the PC correctly (mesh side panel or not, you still need to get the hot air out of the chassis)? Do your temp drop a lot if you take the side panel off and blast a box fan at your PC?
 
Having the board outside the case on a rudimentary test bench did nothing for temps, even laying it horizontally. Mounting seems solid, will re-mount on the fifth though. 4ghz speed and 1.4 bclk.
 
Post some pics i want to see that bad boy mounted, But it sounds like you should try lapping or some new thermal paste.
 
UPDATE: Lowering the hell out of the vcore (1.225) got me to high 70s low 80s temps in prime even with a broken fan on the cooler (don't ask). Thanks for all the help!
