Hey guys I just got new ram and when I installed it the computer kept restarting on me.
So then I took out all the ram inserted one of the new sticks and it worked. Then I put in the 2nd new stick of ram by itself and the computer doesn't do anything except display a black screen is the ram DOA or something?


EDIT: I re-sitted the ram and reran the computer and now the computer boots, but right before it goes to the userlog in it will restart and I went into the bios and it says there 2gigs of ram ...
 
With the limited information I have, I would say possibly. Are there any beep codes? Have you tried the suspect stick all by itself?
 
My pc specs are in my signature.

All the other sticks of ram work including one of the new sticks of ram. (The new stick of ram was able to start up and get to desktop on its own).

but the 2nd stick of ram when by itself will go to a black screen and not change. Then I took out that ram and put that one in again by itself again and this time it got pass bios (said I had two gigs it is a G.skillz 1066 2gb pc2 8500 6-6-6-18) and then it tries to load the user log in and restarts and goes to the "start windows in safe mode or normal menu" then tries to load the user log in and restarts and stays on a black screen.

No beeps. The only time I got a BSOD was when I first installed the new 2x2gb g.skillz 1066 2gb pc2 8500 6 6 6 18 with the old 2x1gb g.skillz 1066 pc2 8500 5 5 5 15.

Error message was: Stop: 0x000000D1 and Driver _ IRQL_not _less_or_equal

is it usual if something is DOA only one of the sticks is DOA or should both them normally be DOA?


On a side note ... I just checked my MOBO RAM support page and G.skillz is MIA ... but before people told me that my MOBO would support it and it has for the 1gigs and one of the twogigs was able to run so thats not the reason?

I just want someone else to confirm my findings but I think its a case of DOA .... I tried running the three sticks of ram that I thought that worked and they worked just fine showed 4gigs of ram and when I installed the 4th ram of stick it wouldn't even boot just display a permanent black screen. Is that what a bad stick of ram normally do?

Hrm... I hate to be the only resident geek with comments on this but let me try.
I've seen your specs and you shouldn't have a problem populating all 4 banks. However, have you run Memtest 86+ yet? I'd run a few memory utilities, (most cases you can burn an image file to a cd and boot from disk). Another option would be to pop that one stick in and go into your BIOS and load defaults. It still looks like one DOA stick to me. Run a utility or two just to be sure.
