I built a new ITX desktop for gaming while traveling. Randomly under heavy load it will shut down, then try to restart and fail until I shut the power off for a moment.

Parts:

Corsair RM 650 bought < 6 months ago

intel 4770k
gforce 670 that I RMA'd less than a 2 months ago
Intel 256gb SSD
1tb hard drive
16 gb of gskill memory (I've swapped this out to see if it was causing an issue. It still occured)

This occured with both the old vid card (before RMA) and new one (after.. and it IS a completely different card)

I'm at a loss and somewhat frustrated as I can't get any logs on the issue beyond the generic kernel-power Event ID 41 windows log.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I wonder if you're having the issue with the RM series fan not kicking on fast enough to keep it from thermal shutdown. Take a look at the HardOCP review of the RM series.

-Have you seen what temperatures your cpu reaches under heavy load? maybe it's shutting down due to the heat in your system.
-The most easy way to find out if your PSU has a problem, is to try an older one (*i always keep spare parts for situations like these), or borrow from a friend.
But i think the most probable suspect for your problem is the heat your system produces (for some reason :confused: ). Check the temperatures ;)

Ok, a couple things. Yes I monitor the temperature under heavy load. CPU typically doesn't go above 60-70c and I've prevented it from shutting down in this event in my bios.

I have spare PSU's, but the only reason I haven't swapped them in this case is because it's an ITX case. The whole reason I bought this one is because it's the only one that fits.

I'm thinking atm that the PSU fan issues is the culprit but I'll need to do more research. Thanks for the comment.
 
Well this is annoying. From my research everyone says thermal shutdown for the RM series should only effect the 750 and 850 models. Unfortunately I'm receiving the exact same symptoms for the 650 model, which is apparently uncommon. I'm about to just call and ask for a credit towards a different PSU line..

Very annoying issue as if I don't have a powerful external fan blowing on the unit during heavy use it will shut down 100% of the time. It's making me think that the fan which is supposed to come on at 40% load doesn't come on at all.

For me, with the RM series, Corsair managed to destroy all the good reputation it has created over the years as a PSU manufacturer :(
With the RM series, they lowered the build quality, and -from what you are describing- the functionality as well.!!
 
would take a look at the SILVERSTONE 600W - a good quality and its also made for SFF, it has not come out yet though.
550W PSU is all you need for your rig, take a look @ Seasonic for sure
 
Thank you for the suggestion Soulwrath. I might just have to go that route. I may try putting all of the components into an ATX sized case with a different PSU before spending cash just to convince myself before dropping more money.

Unfortunately I can't seem to find the SX600-G anywhere for sale. Newegg, tigerdirect, NCIX, Amazon, and even Ebay do not sell it.

Theres no reviews of that new SFX 600w from Silverstone, so I'd wait to see how it performs.

If you're not over clocking, You have a 300-350w system. You can get away with nearly anything.
 
That's why I was interested in finding it for sale. I was wondering what people were saying about it after buying it.

The low consumption of my system is actually what I think is troubling my current config. I don't think my power supply is hitting 40%. I think it's hitting something ridiculously close and overheating as a result of the fan never turning on.
 
I took the time to move all of the components over to an ATX case tonight that has a different PSU.. and like magic problem solved. Thought I'd post an answer here..
My first Corsair PSU at that! Great first impression.
