well according to logmein.com, my entire farm is down for the count. We've had more than a few thunderstorms go through the area and it doesn't look as if ANY of my boxen came up gracefully :(

I am flying back to TX this afternoon from WA and I'll assess the damage at that time. I had 2 Big Adv that I think were due to drop today :( :(

Man, this is coming at a bad time. Hope you get everything up and folding again.

14 hours from now, I'll be home so we'll see.

I can relate - one of my Linksys routers (usually solid as a rock trusty old BEFSR41) decided to go wacko last night, I still don't know what happened....lost connectivity to both of my i7 boxen. Luckily they were still crunching -bigadvs but my 260s sat idle unable to connect to the assignment servers the whole time. Ended up unplugging both my Linksys routers (that one and my WRT54G), hooked back up my Netgear WNR834B v2's flashed with DD-WRT, had to reboot one of my desktops...finally got connectivity back to everything after about 2 hours of wanting to bang my head against the wall.

For awhile there I was wondering if the gpu assignment servers were down...then I realized no, it was just me. :(

Why two routers BTW?

Too much crap hooked up :)
3 desktops, 1 printer, 1 dvr, Xbox 360 - all wired - that's the main reason (since routers only have 4 LAN ports)
on the wireless side I have Ps3, PSP, my HTC Aria, Wii, NDS, and any laptops that make their way into my house for me to fix :D

I already had spare routers so rather than buy hubs I just run a 2nd router as a switch, basically....with the Linksys, I used the BEFSR41 as a wired bridge, turned off DHCP and turned it on "router" mode (instead of "gateway"); on the Netgear, it's set up as a wireless client bridge (basically making it a WAP).

As for the eventual follow up question I'm sure to get "why do I have 4 routers" :)
I've always been a Linksys fan, I used the BEFSR41 forever, when I needed wireless I tried a D-Link, hated it, returned it and got the WRT54G. Then the WNR834's were on sale as refurb, I bought one, loaned it out to an ex friend and while they had it, purchased another as a spare of a spare or to use as a WAP. ;) Just to keep things somewhat simpler, I either use both Linksys or both Netgears at the same time. Technically the Netgears are easier since they're both running DD-WRT so the firmware options and hw are the same. (I'm planning on leaving the Netgears hooked up permanently from now on.)

Thanks for the explanation. I'm not a networking guy and don't have the experience to set up complex networks but it still interests me. I make do with one router and one switch albeit with 16 ports. :)

It's not fun...I've basically learned by the seat of my pants and trial and error. :) (and google on the computers hooked up to the working router at the time :D)

Out of curiosity, how reliable are wireless routers in general? I wonder because i've got a Netgear Rangemax wireless N router that is probably close to working overtime. I've got my lappy, folding1, and folding2 hooked up to it wireless. I have my Toshiba HD-A1 HD-DVD player, gaming rig, Xbox360, and reciever hooked up to the 4 wired ports. I guess I am asking what the general lifespan is, especially since it is located in my computer room which bakes lately since I no longer run the window unit to save on electrcity.

Probably be better suited for the networking forum but to quickly add my 2 cents, I've literally beaten the crap out of routers before when in full on rage mode (including last night :D) and they still work fine. They've been dusty, in cramped spaces, they get hot...still, no problems.

Most routers do well, but there is a reason why they only have a one year warranty :D

Just about all of the my wireless gear has died within days of the one year warranty going out.

On topic, I've been thinking about getting a UPS. This may be my impetus to get one now. My Asus Laptop didn't miss a beat because it obviously has a battery :D

My sig rig was running fine yesterday (1st round of thunderstorms that took out 2 rigs), but when I checked this morning, it too was down :( Probably due to the second round of thunderstorms that came through late last night / early this morning.

I checked stats and the only thing pumpking out points are the laptops that I have with me.

I have everything connected a UPS, which is tough with some high-wattage GPU boxen. I think I have eight. My favorite for price/performance is the APC Back-UPS RS 1500VA. They have nice LCD readouts.

I'm just like Sazan, except that I prefer CyberPower to APC. You can't go wrong between the two, so just pick the one that you find on sale with free shipping. Also, make sure that you pay attention to the wattage ratings. And lastly, pay attention to how many of the outlets on the UPS are "Battery Backup" vs. "Surge Protection Only." On one of my units that has 8 outlets, half of them are surge protection only. That's not a big deal as long as you realize it in advance. And finally, you'll find that the big UPSs are pretty expensive, but don't forget that a few smaller ones will work just as well if you have the space.

"Buy UPS's" is on my list, I just can't get over the prices....Cyberpower stuff is cheaper than APC's, but every APC product I have has never failed me so far, so it'd be hard to buy anything but APC for me.

I guess it depends on where you live and if you're gone from time to time. If I'm not at work I'm usually home so I can always switch my stuff back on if we have a brown out or a rolling blackout or something.

I pick up a UPS very couple of months.....

I need a new one that can carry my SR-2 rig pulling 575 watts.

It's not going to be cheap

I consider a $200 UPS to be cheap insurance for a multi-thousand dollar computer. :D

I have a question about UPSs:

If you lose power and the UPS turns on to battery power, does the computer have some way of knowing (by itself) that this has happened and to shut down in an orderly fashion? Or if left alone will it eat the battery and then drop out just like losing the line power once the battery is gone?

The computer has no way of automatically knowing that it is running on battery power. However, most modern UPSes come with software and a way to connect them to your PC so you can have the software automatically shut down your PC when the UPS switches to battery mode.

A modern UPS should have a USB cable to connect to the PC. Older ones tend to use serial cables, and some support both. You can use the manufacturer's software, but Windows will usually detect the UPS and treat it like a laptop battery, so that you can control when the computer goes to sleep if the power goes out.

The linked Cyberpower is probably good. I have two of the equivalent APC 1500VA unit, which is slightly more expensive. The best IMHO are APC SmartUPS models, but they cost about double I think.

linksys gigabit switch FTW.. can usually find them for about 10-20 bucks.. i've been using one for a while now.. only downfall is that it doesnt support jumbo frames even though the box clearly says it does.. but yeah my old network was setup pretty much the same.. modem to dlink DI-624 to Airlink router.. had my computers running on the linksys switch connected to the dlink router to keep them separated from the airlink which was running the wifi connection for all the laptops in the house.. was a confusing mess but worked great for what i wanted it to do..

Yea I am having another crap PPD day too. Landed another 6040 late lastnight, and it should finish about 14 hours from now which means all the PPD I have been posting is off my 8800gts and gt240 and a few protomol units being done on a crappy Pentium D (SMP units are to slow on it:D).

Does this mean i'm on borrowed time now? My current wireless router is 2.5 years old

My Linksys is probably between 5 and 7 years old and still going strong.

Yeh switches FTW.

I have the house wired with gigabit. I think I have well over a dozen devices hitting the router. That used to higher before the current bonus structure.

Any think that I (and others with similar rigs) should look at?

Edit:
This looks tasty....
http://www.amazon.com/Cyberpower-CP...4?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1283459343&sr=8-4

I've seen these as low as $130 w/free shipping. Just gotta catch it at the right time.

I am home and have assessed the damage.

Main rig did complete Big Adv WU, but internet was down (thus the reason I couldn't see anything via logmein.com). WU was sent up, but credit won't be as good as it is several hours behind schedule. It pulled down a 6061 so hopefully a Big Adv by the time I wake up in the morning.

Second i7 was a flush. Past due date, so I flushed the WU and started another one. Pulled down a 6077 and hopefully it'll pull down a Big Adv before I wake up in the morning.

All other rigs just pushed a bunch of WUs up and pulled new ones down.

Not a complete and utter loss, but lost a day and a half of production. Gonna have to go look at some UPS's next week while I am home.
