I got my rig running again, but noticed that the HDDs could only be recognized in a specific order using the cables. I switched to a new set (modular PSU) and it worked fine. It may have been a different configuration that did it, but in general is that normal?

No this is not normal.

Is there any noticeable damage to the connectors on either end? Are you using any power splitters off of the same cable?
 
Nope and nope. We noticed last week, thought it may have been sata data cables. I did not test every option last night, but when i switched cables completely it worked just fine.

Note, that when I worked on this last, we would get one, two or some times all 3 drives, but not always able to boot windows, bios would show fine but then hang on load screen. I emailed kingwin and am waiting for a response.
 
I have a couple posts about the PSU itself. But nothing really telling me it is complete crap. Is there something I can do to monitor or test the PSU?

I am at a point where i need to eliminate the issue in my rig:
1. Bad PSU - Causing inconsistent power to HDDs (explains errors, and clicking, not showing up)
-Caused bad memory (i have one bad stink now)
2. Bad Mobo - Caused bad memory, or bad memory slot (doesn't look likely atm)
- Causing HDDs issues, not being recognized, and drive read issues.

So i need to figure out what is bad here, i def have one bad stick of memory, but what cause it? And what of the HDD issues?
 
Took the PSU to a shop in town, came back good. But they cant test under a load, so cant really know how good it is. Also tested the cable and showed current for all 3 devices. We are thinking that the cable will not support the load for 3 devices.

I bought some molex:sata cables and have 2 hard drives on that and one on the cable and no issues right now. Anyway to view or see realtime voltage for HDDs?

That is not normal unless the cable is unusually thin. I typically put up to 6 hard drives on a single cable here at work in my files servers. I have never had any problems with only 3. Does the cable feel warm at all?
 
have not noticed, but then again never felt them up either.

And i agree, sounds ridiculous, the drives pull so little...
 
IF you have a spare molex connector on a cable you can probe it with a multimeter. Short of cutting up an adaptor cable I can't think of any real way to monitor a cable that only has SATA connectors.

Also a mulitmeter can only tell you voltage averaged over a relatively long (I think it's seconds for most meters) time. It can't tell you what is happening on shorter timescales (for that you need an oscilloscope)

Three drives on a cable should not normally be a problem though. I'm wondering if you have a general problem with one of the power rails and the cabling is the straw that broke the camels back.
 
I was having some issues last night. Issues loading a couple drivers, it would hang up and i would restart. Well i let it sit there and got a BSOD.

In general windows takes a while to load, and while the comp is running ill have CPUz, realtemp, asus probe, and hwmonitor. Ran Prime 95 and burn in test for a couple minutes each, same results......nothing.

I need to install my hsf (currently just the heatsink) before i run multiple loops on either test.
