Bad Performance WD Greens & FreeNas

Hi

I have something really strange with Western Digital Greens. Using a Freenas server with an IBM M1015 controller (flashed to IT mode) I get real bad performance when connecting 4 WD Greens of 2TB each, no matter if I make a raid10, raidz1, stripe, it's all bad. (like 20mb/s - 30mb/s if i'm lucky). It also seems the more data is written, the slower they get.

Tried all zfs combinations like raidz1, just one disk, raid10 (2 mirrors), etc. It seems there's always one of the drives way and way slower then the others so they have to wait till that drives finished it's writing job.

Reads looking good, it's just on the writing. Smart status is fine. Using 4K sectors when creating the ZFS array, also tested the 512 but that looks even worse

I'm having also 4 Seagate Baracuda's 2 TBs and they perform really well (350mb/s write to a raid10 zfs). I know the Greens will not get these speeds but even with 100mb/s I would be happy)

Since I'm working with Macs, it's not that easy to test the drives so I gave them back to the store I bought them and their tests where fine (60 to 100mb/s each, acceptable for the green drives) so they say the drives are just fine.

I think something is not compatible or having issues on my system, maybe some of you have some suggestions?

I got the same bad speeds when connecting them straight to the mobo sata ports as well.

Thinking of selling the 4 drives and buy another 4 of the Seagates

My system

Norco 2208
Intel Server Board 3200SHLC
IBM M1015 (flashed it IT mode)
8 Gig
FreeNas 8.2

Any suggestions would be much appreciated

Marcel

I had similar poor performance with my 1.5TB EARX drives, with and without 4k sector alignment.

Ended up using those in my windows flexraid file server, and buying hitachi drives for my Freenas ZFS server.

I'd suggest using them in a windows environment as single disks, or as you said selling them and buying more drives that have the performance you're expecting in freenas.

Yeah, I have have a pair of those 1.5TB EARX as well, same terrible performance. I was hoping there was some kind of fix / setting somewhere hidden to make them work.

After having WD Green in my NAS, and another local system backup drive I won't ever own a Green again.

Painfully slow.
