Bad overclocker

I have an a8n-sli with the 1004 revision of the bios, dual leadtek 6800 ultra (cooled by nv5 silencer) and an fx-55.
i use the provided overclocking software in the nvidia panel, and it puts them at 454 and 1.15. i get artifacts (however not that big)
therefore, how do i overclock these slowly, till i get a stable clock?
should there be an incrementel difference between ram and core?
should i do it in 1mhz increments? or 10 or what?
what program should i use to see if it is stable? 3dmark 05 (but does take ages) rrthrdibl? what?

First, once you've done the self test, back off by about 5Mhz till you get no artifacts, could you describe what they are? Gliches or are you getting snow like effects? You can generally tell what is artifacting, memory or core, by what they look like.

You can move the sliders on Coolbits to adjust the clocks, as a general rule of thumb push it up slowly by 5Mhz intervels. Rthdrbl works well, but leave it running for a bit till your load temps maintain steady for a few minutes. 3Dmark05 can work well, but really playing a game for 30 minutes and recording temps with Rivatuner is the best way.
 
start from your default, in 3D (not 2D) go in 5mhz increments on both memory and GPU... when you see artifacting, back off by 10 mhz on both, if you want to be really safe... or by 5 if you are willing to potentially risk /some/ stability... in this case, you could start from your top end there and work backwards by 10hmz on both memory and gpu (right off the bat) and see if that is stable... from what I understand, OCing the memory speed really gives you better boosts than OCing the GPU, and you should try to keep them sort of matched, but it's not crucial to do so. But if you want to stay matched, your default is 400/1100.. so say an incremental step up for both would be 425/1150 - but you could just do 400/1150 if you wanted and you would still see a performance gain... I would not go beyond 1200 on the memory with the GPU @ 400... because I think that might start into an un-balanced OC situation... where GPU speed could start to bottle-neck the overall perf... but just guessing at that... and it would be very VERY slight. anyways, 450/1200 would be the next balanced OC sweet spot. IMO...

but for you, I am going to toss a WAG (wild ass guess) that 430/1140 will be a safe and good OC for you for long 3D intensive apps, based on your artfacting @ 454/1154 and what I have found with my own OCing... anyways... hope that helps.
 
well this is another thing that i was wondering about... i did not use the coolbits registry upgrade, but the manual overclocking controls were already there...
in 3dmark 05, it is small squares of off colour and flickering on a texture.... maybe 20-30 of them at any one time...

Well, 454 on a 6800U is a pretty high clock, I doubt cooling is an issue with an Nv5, the card is just being pushed higher than it can work properly, some cards dont even budge 1Mhz with the best of cooling.
