Bad noises when playing games

Hi,
I usually always find an answer for my problems by doing a search here or somewhere else but I don't know the word to describe the problem I have. When I play some games, that EAX is enable and there is a big explosion like sound, the speakers do this bad noise (this is the word I don't know to describe this). The noise is similar to when you listen to radio but you are not on a frequency that is transmitting. I'd like to know the words to describe this so I could look for fixes. If someone is willing to explain how to fix the problem I'd appreciate a lot, otherwise I can manage to find the answers. I got an Audigy 2ZS by the way.
Thanks

Sorry for my bad English, it ain't my native langage.

sounds like it might be distortion or something. go into your audigy speaker settings and set the master volume to about 75% or so. I noticed that if you have the bar set at 100%, you'll get terrible distortion for some reason. Also, what speakers do you have?

The master volume is already at 75%. Also, lowering the volume in game options fixes the problems sometimes but not always. I have 5.1 Altec Lansing speakers, bought them 2 1/2 years ago. Any other idea how to describe the sound besides "distortion"?

it sounds like a combination of clipping and some sort of distortion.

Vol, does it only happen in games with EAX enabled?
what if you play an mp3 and turn the volume up very high? does a similar effect take place?

also, have you tried updating the soundcard drivers?

Thanks for the link. The definition that they give of "clipping" is exactly what I was trying to explain. It doesn't only apply to game with EAX enable. It happened also with an other driver, I don't remember the name at this moment (software 3D or something), with the game Freedom Froce 2. I can play mp3 and video at very high volume without this problem.

The drivers I use are the one from the CD I got last summer with the card when I bought it. I doubt it would change anything to have the newest drivers since old games still have the same problems. Also, I had this problem since I got this computer last summer. The games I played back then (when the drivers were the newest one) didn't have that problem so I didn't bother with it at that time.

I just remember that I had this problem with my headphones too. So if it's not my system then I guess both my speakers and headphones are "broken".

I'm gonna do some search with "clipping" and "garbage noise" to see what I can find.

Thanks

Makes no difference even if the games are 10 years old. First and foremost, when having hardware issues a person should always try at least two newer driver versions (3 total in other words). Never bother with drivers on the cd as they are nearly always obsolete. This formula applies to most computer hardware btw ;).

G'luck either way

It is probably a PCI issue if this only happens when using EAX. I have had the same problem. The problem is that there is not enough PCI bandwith to the soundcard resulting in dropped and/or corrupted samples. Google "audigy pci latency". Note that I couldn't really solve this problem. I suspect it may be because I have a PCI Express video card instead of AGP. I'm not sure that adjusting the PCI latency for the graphics card really does anything in my case because its not AGP.
