bad IDE port on mobo?

I've got two old pc's i'm putting XP on and getting some apps on them for my uncle. the first one, which i've just started on, i think it has a bad ide port on the mobo. it will not recognize either of the cd rom drives that i have plugged into it, and i tried switching the cords around, so the hard drive was in the bad ide port and the cd drives were in the other one and then i couldn't get into the bios. does a hard drive need to be present to get into the bios? if so, then i think it's bad. and i can't really install windows with no cd drive. it's a 600mhz intel processor. one of the old huge slot ones lol.

anyone ever had a problem similar to this?

Check your jumper settings and also check to make sure you have the cable connected properly. IDE cables have pin 1 marked on them by either a colored stripe or dotted lines. When you connect the cable make sure that is lined up with pin 1 on the drive, if it's backwards that will keep a system from allowing you into BIOS.

If you have more than 1 drive on a cable, (CDROM, DVDROM, HD, etc) make sure one is jumpered as master and one is jumpered as slave. If they're jumpered as the same thing, (both master or both slave) neither drive will work.
 
yeah i rememberd jumpers after the first time it wouldn't work. so that's ok. the thing that makes me think it's just a bad port is because the hard drive wouldn't function on the first port. and i couldn't have had the cable backwards because it has a little noch that allows it to fit only one way.
 
have you tried plugging only one cd-rom drive into the second ide port? i'd also examine the IDE cable to make sure it isn't damaged. it also wouldn't hurt to check whether any of the pins for the IDE port are bent.

Yes you can

Make sure your cable is installed right (red line closer to the molex power connector), make sure you plugged in your optical drives, and make sure your master/slave connections are correct....
 
ok i got it running fine using 1 cd rom and the hard drive on the same cable, thanks for the help.
