Bad HDMI -> DVI cable?

I just got a new HDMI -> DVI cable for my Dell U2311H.

Now, monitor will not go into power saving mode - instead, it displays a "no DVI cable connected" message, when, clearly, there is a cable plugged in.

It does not do this with a different setup: HDMI -> DVI adapter + unreasonably long DVI cable.

I presume the cable is faulty. Should I just buy a different one? Anything that will remedy the problem?
