Bad gaming performance

Hi All,

To start off I have read many articles on how to fix Duel core & gaming performance issues but none of those fixes seem to work for me.

I just upgraded my system to the below:

AMD Opteron 170 @ 2.5mhz
ASUS A8N32
2GB CORSAIR XMS TWINX2048-3500LLPRO
2x 36GB WD Raptor drives (no raid)
EVGA 7800 GTX KO 256 Video card
SONY SDM-P234/B Black @ 1920x1200
WinXP 32 bit SP2

3DMark05 score of 8000 ish – the actual video playing was shuttering a lot too was not smooth at all.

I am disappointed at the gaming performance. I only play 2 games, World of Warcraft and Far Cry. Warcraft shutters so bad I get a headache if I play to long. It even shutters if I move the resolution down to 1024x760 no AA but not as bad. Far cry on max setting seems to be a lot slower then on other systems I have had.

My brother upgraded to the same system but with an FX-53, generic 7800GTX & 333mhz ram, his setup smokes mine in games.

I have done all the fixes from MS hotfix to setting Affinity to one core with no change. Is there anything else that I might be missing here? I am about to return the Optron 170 and get a FX-57 @ 2x the cost :(

strange i played WOW for hours on my 170 without any fixes.

Didn't the guide say something like 'don't install this fix for WOW?'. I personally never had any gaming issues and have never installed those 'fixes'. Worse comes to worse, just set affinity for the WOW.exe.

What I did for the affinity is launch WOW and Alt + Tab out and bring up task manager and uncheck one of the cores then Alt + Tab back, no change in game.

So you have a Opteron 170 and WOW runs smooth as silk? What rez?

Just an update, I bought an FX 55 to replace the Opteron 170. What a difference! My games are now running smooth and are very fast. It was the processor causing all my problems. So if you’re buying a 170 for gaming I would think twice.

Too late to offer any advice, but are you sure the cpu info was setup correctly in bios?

Dual cores in general aren't giving a huge gaming increase yet.....hopefully that will change this year.

I must be the cheapest man alive but I just could spend $1000+ dollars on chip. For that kinds money I'd want to be able to DRIVE it :)

There is a known glitch with WoW and multiprocessor machines.. they say it first showed up in 1.8.. as previous versions were fine. I have a little "choppy" performance in WoW and my framerate maxes at 64fps on my 7800 GTX (with vysnc off). People with Pentium D chips have the same problem (though only one such person has posted so far in that thread), you can read about it at the official WoW forum here

As for Far Cry, I haven't had a problem.. so I'm not sure what to say on that one

It is quite obvious that the problem with your computer is the fact that you have underclocked your processor to 2.5mhz, which is well below stock speeds.

 hehe :)

I would chaulk this up to you having a bad chip... if what you experienced was true for all 170 owners there would be alot more people posting with similar stories. Wish you the best of luck with your FX. =)

It is very possible I had a bad chip, funny though windows ran just fine, plus my future mark score was not bad at all. Oh well, I will just upgrade to the FX2 153 dual core when its available ;)

Very very strange.. Anyways I HAD an opteron 170, and I run my resolution at 1680x1020 with EVERYTHING maxed out except only 2x sampling and I get an average of 40fps inside Orgimar on Mannorath at night(probably one of the busiest servers). Outside of the major cities I get over 60fps. I never noticed any lag/skipping/etc except for the 1.9 release, which was later fixed by 1.9.1 per the release notes.

I have no problems with my Opteron 165 at stock or overclocked in WOW either. I just helped my friend build his 820 and we have no problems. We both run tons of mods and have played since right before the 1.8 switch on our dual cores.

Not sure if this makes a difference, I run on an 1800xl and my buddy runs on a 800 pro. So both of our machines are ATI running the latest set of drivers. Neither of us are running any additional 'fixes' or 'drivers', we installed windows, installed card, installed latest card drivers, install WOW, and then play.

The funny thing is the game would say I was running at 40 - 60FPS. My monitor runs at 60 mhz so that explains the 60 cap for me.

I have a 175 and I have 0 problems gaming... Although, I must say, I've always used ATI video cards, but recently I switched to Nvidia, and I've been reinstalling my Nvidia drivers about once a week... I never had to do that with ATI. This is also a fresh install of Windows also so it's not because of leftover ATI drivers or anything. It's strange.
