bad framerate in WoW

I've got a computer that was new about a year ago, and up until the WotLK expansion I was getting anywhere from 30 fps in Shatt and any of the 10/25 man raid up to 60 or more fps everywhere else. even when I was multiboxing on this machine I was getting 15-20 fps in Shatt and 40 everywhere else. now, I get 12-15 fps in dalran and about the same in 25 man raids, 20 to 25 fps in all the other instances and old contend is slightly better but still not up to what it used to be.

I'm not sure where the problem is. I put this box together myself, and I don't exactly remember the components but they were all pretty decent. Off the top of my head I've got a Q6600 at stock speed, 4gb ram (don't remember what kind or what speed but it was decent) BFG8800 GTS 512mb video card. A 600 or 650w ps (again don't remember what kind but the guy at the store told me it was the correct one to drive the card) Oh, and I have an acer p241w 24" lcd.

Is my machine that far behind the curve now, or is the new textures in the expansion that much harder on the machine?

Thanks

I've got a Q6700 and 8800 GTX, and I can set everything to the highest setting except shadows.

Do this: Move the slider to Ultra, and the move the Shadows slider to one notch below the maximum.

Your framerate should be fine. I get between 75-150 fps, depending on where I am. Yours might be a little lower because you run at a higher res than me, but WoW should be very playable.

The engine is so strung out that its hard to pull a lot of fps when you are in populated areas. On top of that, BC fps don't really mean anything because the engine was vamped up twice now since WOTLK came out.
Set your shadows off/lowest, cluster radius and density at half, no projected textures, view distance at half and you will see your old frames per second. This was what the "max" was in Burning Crusades.

The WoW is outdated like crazy. With the new textures and shadows and stuff like that... it's kind of like painting a turd. The game still looks good if you have everything turned up for a 5 year old MMO, but .. as others have said, there isn't a whole lot you can do.

I know with the addition of dynamic shadows with WoTLK release it's killing a lot of framerates for people. Try turning those down.

WOTLK Doubles your possible view distance? Wow! Go Blizzard! I stopped playing wow back in the day because the view distance was so crappy and cheap. Does the extra view distance become available with a patched vanilla wow, or do you have to spend the 60 dollars to see futher?

Not sure on this, but in Arathi basin I can see from one side of the BG to the other! :D

They redid the engine across the board. Even the trial accounts run on the new engine.

Ok, so I tried everything mentioned and things got a little bit better until I raided OS 25 last night and experienced 2fps. I turned everything down to lowest and shut the game down and then restarted and the best fps I was able to get in that instances was 5fps. All I have to say is WTF is up with this?

You have serious issues, then. I don't get that bad of performance on integrated video.

Given your system specs in the original post, I have no clue to why you'd be getting such bad frame rates. My system that I used to use, was on par or slightly worse than yours and performed great.

Are all your drivers up to date? Motherboard - chipset drivers, video drivers, audio drivers, something is eating up resources on you.

All of my drivers are up to date. On the recommendation of one of my guild members (ex ms employee) I deleted my video driver and let vista re install it and I am now running around 15 fps in 25 mans. So an improvement there. Its annoying to say the least.

This is a great example of why a faster dual core is better for gaming machines but nobody wants to accept that having 2 less cores can be better (what good are they idleing at 0%?).

Try turning off shadows, I heard it's a huge performance hog in WoW.
