Bad DVD quality on LCD screen?

I was watching a movie just now on my VP171b and the quality was real shitty. It was Cold Mountain and in the background where the forest was, you could see all this flickering and noise in the trees.

One of my friends who has the same monitor has also mentioned this - and that they look fine when he uses the s-video out to his TV.

Ideas?
 
Very simple... a DVD's resolution is much much smaller than the capabilities of your LCD monitor. I'm not sure of the numbers, but I bet some no it all here will soon post them :p . So when you go full screen with a DVD from it's original output of (I think) 600x400 and scale it to fill your LCD screen of probably 1280x1024, you will see the artifects of each pixel so to speak being scaled up with the picture.

... Now that I think about it, this is probably not your issue. I just remembered when I went to watch I-Robot on my machine, I got these weird "interlace" like lines through the screen at the full screen setting. I then just tried to stretch the window out to fill the screen area, and the "lines" weren't there anymore. I figured it's a bug/defect with the disk that is only picked up through the higher resolutions of our monitors or an HDTV capable TV. I would like to post a pic, but the player I have (PowerDVD) won't allow me to use the "screen capture". Can someone recommend an alternative?

Yeah, unfortunately, until everything is in HD lcds have to scale the image heavily if you want full screen DVD playback, which leads to artifacts (just like running a game at 640x480).

I've been using my dell2001fp to watch DVDs and play my xbox, and although it handles scaling way better than any other tft I've seen (it has somekind of onboard image processor that softens the effects of scaling, at the expense of increasing blurriness as resolution drops), the image quality is still inferior to even a low-end 20" tv.

So yesterday I threw in the towel and bought a philips 32" "pure flat" widescreen crt for watching DVDs/consoles on (being delivered Wednesday).

So that's me sorted.

If it's any consolation though, when HD stuff starts to become widely availiable (probably later in 2005), our TFTs will pwn regular TVs hard.

Check out some of the WMV HD sample stuff on MSs MediaPlayer website to see what I mean, eye laceratingly sharp and vivid.
