Bad CPU?

When I start my computer, I'm getting 1 long beep followed by 2 short beeps, no video. I think this exact same thing happened a couple of years ago when AMD replaced my original Opteron 185 under warranty. Maybe they'll do it again?

Does the beep pattern mean bad CPU?

I have dual cards for SLI - i tested each in single configuration, but still get the same 1 long / 2 short beeps. I think I need a new mb/CPU.

Have you tried both slots to make sure its not a PCI-E slot going bad? Apparently, 1 long 2 short does indicate a problem with video and the BIOS not being able to initialize video.

Any other computers your can try the cards in?

Yea, I tried swapping out the cards but neither will work in the primary PCI slot. It's gotta be the the CPU thats dead although the pattern of beeps does point to video. I checked my history of post a couple years back, and the same thing happened with my first Opteron 185 CPU. Back then I thought it was the motherboard but it turned out to be the CPU - a spare socket 939 CPU that i had lying around worked fine in it's place. AMD sent me a replacement which HAD been working fine until last night. I suspect a troubled model.

As was said, try the cards in the secondary slot. If it doesn't work on the secondary slot, then you might have trouble with your CPU. If it does work, it's probably your motherboard going bad.

take all but one stick of ram out some boards bioses have that beep code when the ram goes bad.

I'll try all the above, and see what happens. I'll post back with results. Thanks all.

I also had a similar problem at work where one of the computers had opteron. The video card was the error..

I tried all of the below:
I swapped in a spare compatible CPU, swapped out single sticks of RAM, tried each card individually in the primary and secondary slots but get the same beep pattern. So it's probably a motherboard problem. Time to buy new parts. My system was getting a bit outdated for the games I like to play anyway. Thanks to all for all the suggestions.

Those 'beeps' actually mean something. Check the motherboard manual to find out what it means. Also check online.

Doesn't always mean bad video. Sometimes it could be as simple as a bad bios that needs reflashing or NVRAM out of space.

What error stop message do you observe during post?

I wouldn't doubt it is as simple as checking power supply, since not enough power to components obviously stops it from functioning. How old is you power supply? Is it rated high enough to power all your components comfortably?

In order I would do the following troubleshooting:
1) Remove all but the most important components. Just leave in the cpu, one stick of ram, one video card, mouse, keyboard.
2) Check power cables and supply.
3) Reseat ram (preferably after cleaning).
4) Try booting up the troubled system without a video card (even though you can't see shyt). This will just do a basic test to observe if the culprit is indeed the video card.
5) Reseat pci card (after cleaning).
6) Reseat cpu (after inspecting).
7) Try different stick of ram in each slot.
8) Try the video card in a different motherboard. If it works you can rule that out as being the culprit.

...but it's strange, the fans all turn on and the mb recognizes with a solid long sustained beep when the aux PCI power isn't plugged into my 8800 gts.

CPUs are unlikely to be bad, but you'd have to try it in another mobo to rule it out

I happened to have a working old single core 4000 Athlon64 on hand and popped it in but no go, so yes, it's probably the motherboard, but about 3 years ago I did have an CPU failure on the same board, and everyone thought it was the motherboard. Then, I popped in this old CPU, the one i just tested, and viola, the system came to life.

Asus a8n SLI se, nforce4, socket 939, shipped with the latest bios at the time 3 years ago, which I think is the final.
@spooony, the beeps are a guide, just an indication. When it was the CPU that went bad 3 years ago, I got the exact same pattern, I was told it is the chain of events as the video is the first thing being sensed as broke. BUT really not positive about it.
