Bad Company 2 Crashing

I just downloaded bc2 with steam to try on my new computer and every time I try to play it i can access the main menu for ~1min tops then the screen artifacts and the whole system freezes. I don't seem to have this problem with any other games though I havent played that many (wc3, tf2, css), any you have any experience with this kind of issue and know how it might be fixed
Specs:
i5 3570k
amd 4870 (w/ newest drivers)
8gb ram
somewhat older hdd (if that might have any affect at all)

Like I said I haven't had any problems with anything else I've done, but I'll update if something does come up. Meanwhile I'll try a reinstall and see if that helps anything.

try validating the files with steam see if somethings messed up, dunno.

I have that game in steam, and the problem seems to be with sound cards with shoddy OpenAL support. try updating your soundcard drivers if you can.

I have the newest drivers for my sound card, would that account for artifacts and black screens though?

The GPU drivers. The 4870s and other 4800 series cards (as well as Nvidia cards) had issues with BC2, ranging from artifacts to black screens where only the HUD/overlays showed. Seeing as neither the GPU drivers for those cards nor that game will ever be updated again, you might be better off switching GPUs.

wow did they fluff it bad making the drivers or what? oh well since everything else seems to work find I guess I'll just cut my losses and forget bc2, shame.
