Bad card possibly?

I'm helping a friend install his card over the phone and we've ran in to a wall. Here is the card he bought: Asus 9500GT 512MB

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...1336&cm_re=asus_9500gt-_-14-121-336-_-Product

It's replacing an X800 so it'll be a decent upgrade for him. He doesn't game or anything so I don't need comments on how underpowered it is.

Anyways, it's going into an Epox EP-9U1697GLI board with an Opty 146. All running stock, never been overclocked.

Now his X800 is not a powered card, neither is the 9500GT. No 6/8pin connector or molex. It simply goes in and that's it. We put it in and get no video. It does make it past POST though as the LED on the motherboard throws an FF code which means Boot. So no beep codes or anything, just no video.

In order to get the X800 working again he had to clear the cmos then it'd start working again.

Possibly a bad card, or do you think the bus on that motherboard isn't providing enough power for that card. That wouldn't make sense since neither card require external power.

I don't know. At all loss. Chalking it up as a bad card for right this second, but wanted some other opinions.

Fire away. Much appreciated!

Yeah, sounds like you got a dead card. Either that or make sure the power supply can handle that card. I know it's a passively powered card so the psu thing is kinda unlikely.

Might be the motherboard....aren't there different PCIe specs?

that card may be to new for that board....

try it in a newer machine before sending it back...

There is a difference between pci-e 1.0 and pci-e 2.0 which is what the newer cards are, but even if the motherboard has a 1.0 slot and the card is 2.0, it would just run at reduced speed. Similar to the way an AGP 8x card would run at 4x in a 4x slot.

Wish he had access to another machine to try it in. He's in NJ and I'm in NC.

I considered that, but my 8800GT runs fine in a 1.0 slot on my P35-DS3R. Although it is powered by the PSU and not the bus.

Ahh well. RMA the card it is for now. If the replacement doesn't work I guess we can try bumping the voltage up on the bus if his BIOS allows that.

Well, got the replacement 9500GT in and the same thing happens. No video. No POST beep codes. Nothing. Yet the X800 works fine.

Could it possibly be the PCIe slot not providing enough voltage? Wonder if there is a way to up the voltage on the slot.
