Hi guys just a quick question, this server box is running Server 2003 SBS, if the event viewer shows multiple entries of error event 7 (bad block) does it mean the harddrive is starting to fail?

This error event logged every coupler of days, and to my knowledge so far there has not been any problem using this server.

Is it warranted to replace the harddrive?

have you ran chkdsk?

Are there any manuf. diagnostics?

If there is critical data involved then yes, replace the drive(s).

I used a different scanner, it found 3 bad blocks.

Harddrive register compaq as the manufacturer, I don't even know they made HDs.

On google there seems to be utilities that can repair bad sectors, but from what I understand, once you have bad sectors there are good chance it will develop & progress. Any one had any experience repairing these bad sectors?

Sometimes, bad blocks can be repaired or labeled/ignored by the OS, and the drive can continue on for sometime just fine before failing. Sometimes it really is just fine after the blocks are repaired. Other times, it is a sign that the drive is well on it's way to failure.

If the drive is still under warranty, I would backup anything important and rma. I ain't got time for hardware I have trouble trusting.

If not, then, AFTER moving anything I did not want to lose to another drive. I would try the manufacturer's diagnostic software, (available on their website), to check the drive out. See what, if any smart errors there are and see if it can repair the bad blocks. If the blocks are repairable and it showed no smart errors I would continue to use the drive for non critical storage.
I would also check the drive with the manufacturers software regularly, and trash bin the drive if it came up with bad blocks or smart errors again.

I think I'm not going to take the chance since this HD contains critical company data and their main server.

Now backup time...
