Bad 9800 pro???

Currently upgrading a computer for a friend and he picked up a 9800 Pro for is 2Ghz Dell P4 with Rambus memory. The old card was a Gforce MX 2 card. My friend initially installed the 9800 with bundled drivers ( I think 4.6 Cats) and ran BF1942 once and game was fine. He then installed Doom3 the next day and the pc would crash alot. Got several VPU recovery errors.

SO with all the VPU errors I turned VPU recover off. Now when it loads to desktop the screen is completely "snowy" and distorted and can't get into anything.

So I recently downloaded and tried both 3.9 and now 3.10 cats. I installed the .NET framework, followed the guide to remove all signs of the previous driver ( Add/Remove Programs, Regcleaner, Driver Cleaner, Cleaned out CAB files) restarted. Manually installed newer drivers and when loading into desktop same snowy distorted screen.

Could VPU recover still be off even though drivers were cleaned and removed? IS it the drivers or the card?

I am thinking of telling my friend to return the 9800 pro and get this card for about the same price he paid for the 9800.

I would say it's the drivers. My brothers 9600xt and my old 9500 pro and a friends 9800 pro are all having the same problems. Crashes with Doom 3, perfect with everything else. Have you tried the 4.8 drivers or the 4.91 hotfix drivers (http://downloads.guru3d.com/download.php?id=18)? It cleared up alot of the problems with these three cards.

Oh, and HELL YA! If you can return it and get a 6800, do it as fast as possible. Mush better card all the way around.
 
I am running 3.7 cats and never crashed in doom.
 
yeah return that 9800pro ASAP dude....... and why did he pay 250 for a 9800pro? lol u can get those for under 200.. but yeah return it!!!!!!!! get that 6800 OC.. and the 6800 WILL KILL the 9800 pro in doom3!!! :p
 
Well I think I figured out the problem. I have a 9800 pro in my pc, so I pulled mine out and isntalled his, and instantly got VPU recover errors and same distorted desktop. I put my card back in my pc and all is fine again.

Has to be a bad card. The 9800 Pro was going for 179.99 at outpost but the local Frys had it for $230 and he was too impatient to order it so paid the extra cash. Kind of sucks that the local Fry's won't match the online outpost price. So hopefully the 6800 is that price at the local Fry's.
