Backup Up Options

I plan on creating a server with a 2tb drive of data that will mostly be (95%) unchanged, HTPC server. I plan on have a mirrored drive setup for the first half of my data integrity, and want to backup to something else for the second half. 2 Drives. for 2tb of space.

I might all do a Raid 5 setup with maybe a hot spare. So possibly 4 drives Giving me 4tb.

My biggest question is how do people with mega TB drives like 50tb protect their data from drive failure? Is it all to other Hard Drives or is there a tape/optical option?

At work I use tape. That is now 105 LTO2 tapes and a 2 drive 24 slot archive. I purchased the archive in 2006 for around $4700 US and the tapes are $25 US each for about 300 GB of data. The manufacturers call them 400GB tapes but in reality 2:1 compression on any tape drive is only realistic if you have a very limited amount of uncompressable data. I also have probably 100 DLT tapes but I am not recording to them anymore since the tapes are way more expensive per GB. Of course 5 years later I would look into LTO5 not LTO2 since LTO5 packs almost 8 times the data into the same physical cartridge size. Tapes are 2 to 3 times the price though and I would need a new archive...

At home I do not backup my 8 to 10 TB of HTPC recordings yet I just use individual 2TB drives since most of my recordings are replaceable. For the 50 to 100GB that is not replacable I do backups to 2 different hard drives rotating between the two using monthly fulls, weekly differentials, and daily incrementals.

I'll have about 100gb of non-replaceable data too. Has every industry gone to hard drive backups? Is there no mega giga-byte tape or optical solution?
