Backup to VHD vs iSCSI

I am looking at the Veeam setup for one of my clients and they have an iSCSI NAS for the backups. Now whoever set this up added it to ESXi as a datastore which is correct but to backup to it they created 2 500GB VHD's for the Veeam/Backup Exec Virtual Machine and backing up that way. Do you think that is ok? I am thinking about getting rid of those and just using the iSCSI initiator in Windows Server to do the backups to.

Is it just me or is that the wrong setup?

Wouldnt MSs iSCSI still be a VHD solution for backing up since it creates VHDs for iSCSI targets anyway?
