How long does it take to back up about 40gb of stuff? I just bought a WD backup and its taking a long time. How long is it suppose to take usally?

My HD i need to backup is a 7200rpm SATA. and backing up to a WD 7200 using USB 2.0.

Ok I just noticed that it was formated as FAT32. Damn I just wasted 2hrs backing up all my stuff too. Should i leave it as is or format w/ NTFS?

USB2.0 is likely to give you ~20MB/s, which is 60*20 = 1200MB/min
40000/1200 = 33.3, so it should take at least 33 mins.

You can convert that drive from Fat32 to NTFS through the command line, you didn't f up, just run the conversion util.

yea i just did a quick format to NTFS. Is it suppose to be takin like 2hrs to back up though?

wow it took me 2 hrs
note that my estimate is somewhat of a 'best case' estimate, provided that you have a mid-quality USB2 controller.

ok well i just had time to back it up again after formatting in NTFS and it did it in about 30minutes this time. thanks guys.
