Backup Solution for Exchange

I recently started at a school system that has Exchange 2010 as a virtual server on ESX. They don't have it backed up in any way.....

I'm looking for solutions. I know Veeam is very good for backing up VMs but I don't know how it handles for instance a database restore rather than an entire server restore. It seems to be VSS-based so it should work ok.

Other suggestions?

While you're still searching for a backup product...just make note to have someone check the drive space, as the circular logging files will be building up big time each day and cramping that drive space soon.

Circular logging has actually been enabled on this server. Where are the logs stored so I can monitor this?

We use CommVault. It is amazing. It is complicated as hell inside the GUI but we have never lost a file, email, anything.

Use Veeam to do the VM image backup and then something like Microsoft DPM for Exchange..assuming you don't have a lot of other physical servers or app-specific backups you want done.

I'm kinda in this same boat ?

I have a sbs box runnning website & eschange, In a vm on Xen,

Any idas how to backup the vm or os ?

Have you looked into Avamar yet? It offers Exchange and VM backup together with dedup.
There is a Virtual edition and a Data Store version. The Data Store has both single node and N+1 configs.

I've seen some customers who are very happy with it backing up their Exchange environment. If you want to, I might get some dedup ratio's next week.

someone on this forum recommend HyperOO to backup the images.

BackupAssist would be another one.

Following NetJunkie I downloaded the Microsoft DPM trial and it works great. I think I will go with that method. Veeam for all the vm backups and DPM if management will swing it for more granular exchange backup.

Veeam also has a fairly slick plug-in to do item-level restores back to the Live VM as well.

You need to backup exchange, use NTBackup if they are a poor school, and not just the VM. Backing up just the VM is not a best practice.

As i sit here waiting on Symantec to call me back, I can honestly say with 110% certainty, DO NOT USE FLIPPING BACKUPEXEC!!!!

There is no NTBackup on Server 2008. He can't be using Server 2003 since he said he is running Exchange 2010. So NTBackup would only work for him if he has a Server 2003 license as well.

When you see old people refer to NTbackup with regards to 2008, they generally mean Windows Server BackupTM.

Unless they release 2010 without support(like they did 2008) then it should work.
