I'm looking for software for an external hard drive I use for back ups. I'd like to just plug in the external hard drive and it automatically begins to back up selected drives or folders.

Suggestions?

Ah, it is a bit surprising to me that no one has replied yet. I can suggest several options for backup solutions:
- Easeus Todo Backup www.todo-backup.com offers a handful of advanced backup features.
- With Norton Ghost http://us.norton.com/ghost you can perform full, incremental or differential backups (a very popular choice)
- Praetorian Guard http://www.praetorianguard.net/Server-PC-Backups.aspx provides a central location to setup, manage, and monitor backups, also can backup specific folders

Plenty of other solutions pop up in my mind but I’ll stick to only three :)

Hi, ColdCrow!
Now I do the same exactly by @MAX SyncUp! I save my numerous private pictures to the external hdd to update it automatically when new pictures are added to pc or old ones are deleted. I can help to set up if it is necessary. It can remember the letter of the external disk and change it if it needs. It is very convenience to set up backup once and then just plug in the ex.hdd
Best regards ;)

Genie Timeline is the best in my opinion. U set it up in 3 steps, make first backup, than just have it back up automaticaly or when u want. Its the equivalent to the Time Machine on the Mac,so it has a nice interface, and really just few steps to restore. It works as u requested, just plug in the hdd and select backup, than pull the hdd out :)

I think that SyncToy (free) is a great solution because it doesn't wrap stuff into an archive so you do not need to have the backup software to "restore" the backup. You can just take the disk and plug it into another machine and all of your files are there.

Several sync modes will allow you to pick whether you want to mirror, contribute, or I forget what the third mode is. Great tool and it can be set to do it on a schedule using the Windows task scheduler.
