I have a fileserver with a public share. It runs linux. I have a PC that I do a lot of design work on. I want to sync the files every 24 hours and keep them for 7 days in case I mess up and have to refer to a file that was deleted/overwritten accidentally a week ago.

Like this:
/backup/20070526
/backup/20070527
/backup/20070528
/backup/20070529
/backup/20070530
/backup/20070531
/backup/20070601

What is the easiest way to do this? Transferring the files completely over and over again doesn't really make sense to me. Some days may change maybe 10MB if that.

If you don't want to send all the files over every time, rsync will provide a way to transfer files incrementally. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rsync Not positive if you could use it to get your exact required result, but it's something to look into.

Try "Second Copy" it sync a folder(s) and lets you keep history of backups. I have it sync every 2 hours and it works like a charm.
