My backup setup was a Buffalo Systems 1TB NAS (single drive) and a 1TB external USB drive.

Yesterday my 15 month old son found the USB drive and it dropped about 1 foot to the ground. Now it has the dreaded click of doom and won't read. Next day the wife goes to access the NAS device for iTunes (it's an iTunes server too) and she can't map the drive. I get a "mount error" that my google-fu finds out is hardware related.

I did get all the data on to an internal 1TB so no data loss but the wife was scared shitless. 60GB of picture and video memories lost would mean a lot.

So... I was given permission to reinforce our backup plan! How do I do it? First though was another NAS device with 2 drive mirrored. That should be pretty safe, then I can have a external to keep at work that would be a backup of the backup.

I have about 500GB of data to store (currently but it will grow). I would like to have a centralized location for an iTunes server if possible. Drive mapping would be nice as well. Money constraints are at about $300 (preferably $200).

Any other ideas?

I was looking at a Synology DS211J DiskStation 2-bay, just need a couple hard drive for it.
 
One 2TB hard drive less than $100.
One external case less than $30.

Do an incremental backup of your data once a week or once a month. Keep it in a safe place between backups.

I'd prefer to have more than one drive doing backups.
 
Get the acer whs and load 3x 1tb drives for the storage pool and duplication on, then fill the 4th spot with a 2tb to back up the storage pool.

Sorry my knowledge is limited when it comes to WHS. What is the Acer WHS unit? Got a link? :)
 
I think you should throw an online backup service into the mix for data that important.

I'm a fan/user of CrashPlan, but Mozy, Carbonite, SpiderOak, etc. also fit the bill. I don't know about the others, but CrashPlan can be run from WHS.
 
Nice, I wasn't aware of crashplan. I may have my friend take a look at that. It seems to have a nice price.

Personally, I'm paranoid about backups. I run a WHS box (The original HP Mediasmart Server) with 8TB of Disk space and nightly PC backups. I also use AsusWebStorage to provide off-site cloud storage of my Critical stuff. (Docs, Photos, Home Video's, etc). Unfortunately, Carbonite and Mozy will not run on WHS. AsusWebStorage has a WHS plug in, and a Windows based Client that works on Small biz server.

Right now, I'm migrating to Small Biz Server (I love Technet) with a RAID 5 Array for Mail and remote access, with WHS v1 under a Hyper-V VM for backups. AsusWebStorage for cloud backup of important data. I'll migrate to WHS v2 when it's released, but only for Backups. For media streaming, I am using TwonkyServer and I can VPN into my network to access it remotely.

I'm a big WHS fan as it has saved me Days of effort in the few years I have been running it.

I ended up going with the Synology DiskStation and I bought 2 WD Green 2TB drives for it. I am going to set it up in mirror.

I am going to look at some offsite cloud storage as well for the photos.

Sounds good, I'm most likely going with the same route but not sure if I'll be getting the 211 or 211J. Will have another 2 TB or 2 as backup.
 
Several Dupes, some sorta offsite spot, and an affordable cloud solution is what I recommend.
