When used correctly, RAID may allow your system to do one or more of three things: increase resiliency (continue running if a hard drive fails); improve performance; increase capacity. Increased resiliency is not a backup plan, because hard drive failure is just one of many bad things that can happen to your data.
Rule #3: RAID arrays need a backup plan.
