I have an external hard drive is there an easy way I can back everything up onto it? I'm afraid I might forget something, because I want to format my C drive, without losing anything i needed. Thanks for the help.
 
Although it could take a while, and your external HD has to be BIG, there is a foolproof way to do this. I created a new folder on my big drive, and the went into the drive I was backing up, and copies ALL the files (every single one) to the folder I created on the external drive. To copy them, all I did was go to the root of the drive, and push "select all" and the "copy." Go into the folder on your external drive, and push "paste." Could take a while (read: hours), but it's foolproof. Oh yeah, just make sure that the ammount of free space on your external drive well exceeds the size of files your are copying over. After all is through, just delete the folder from your extermal drive and viola, you have your space back.
 
I use Symantec Ghost to make an image of my drive before I format it.. That way if you wanna go back, just dump the image back and your golden..

If you wanna get specific files back, you just use the ghost explorer to extract files from the image you made..

BTW.. Ghost uses compression when it makes the image, so it won't take as much space as just copying from the root to the external drive.

Second that. Ghost is the way to go for backing up your stuff completely.

I bought symantec Ghost 2003 when it was brand new and have been heavily using it since. Go Ghost!
 
Use ghost. The copy through windows method is flawed and won't copy certain files and may become interupted partway through if it tries to read a file in use and then you will be stuck with a royal pain in the ass finding where it stopped and copying the rest of the files.
