Backup / archiving on DVD ?

Use hard drives. A 500gb hard drive is the equivalent of over 100 DVDs. You can access the hard drive much easier than shuffling through DVDs. Which would be easier to manage... a spindle of DVDs or one hard drive? Better yet, buy 2 hard drives and backup to each. A 500gb hard drive is less than $100. It might seem pricey, but how much is your data worth? Just buy some hard drives and external enclosures and make your own external hard drive. I like enclosures that have an On-Off switch, so I can turn it on to backup, then turn it off afterwards.

I've got 30gb of old music projects from the last 10 years. I put them on multiple hard drives... just to be safe. And all my 20,000 digital pictures live on multiple drives too. Some people say that backing up to hard drives isn't a true backup... but the chances of 2 drives failing at exactly the same time is slim. And, if you ever need to retrieve a backup, you just plug it in and copy it over. Not loading multiple slow DVDs...
I used to have dozens of DVDs for backups... but optical media is small and slow. Hard drives are much faster and CHEAP!

If it's completely unused again and stored properly, a decade or more. The issue would be when new standards come out and the media becomes unreadable by current technology! (same issue with CDs/DVDs people are predicting)

Pretty much. Then as hard drives get bigger and cheaper, just copy your data to the new drives. Again, it would be easier to copy the data from one hard drive to another... than copying dozens of DVDs to more DVDs.
I've got files on my computer from 10 years ago... because I always moved my data to new computers. Backing up to external hard drives is the same thing. When you get a new drive, just copy it over. In one click you can move all your data... rather than burning DVDs over and over.

Yeah, you gotta be ready for the future. Just be sure that you can connect the next hard drive interface with your existing computer.
So far we've had IDE and SATA. IDE has been around for over 20 years... and it's not dead yet. Almost all motherboards still have one IDE connector. And now SATA I and II are everywhere... with no signs of slowing down. I'm sure when SATA 3 or whatever comes out next will be able to connect to your current SATA drives. Just buy new drives and move your data over.
In the future, we'll have external hard drive enclosures with all sorts of connections... Firewire 400/800; USB 1,2; eSATA, and soon Firewire 1600/3200 and USB 3. As long as they make an enclosure to put your old drive in, with the new interface, you'll be fine.
