I've got an older Samsung Syncmaster 171v LCD. It seems that the backlight died on it. I can still see the stuff on the screen but it is no where near bright enough to be usable. No, the constrast is not set wrong. Anybody know if the backlight on an LCD is something that can be replaced (and where to get a replacement) or should I just scrap it and get another (BIGGER) LCD?

I assume the monitor is out of warranty? If it is not just have it replaced that way. Otherwise it will probably be more cost effective just to buy a new LCD rather than pay to have a new backight put in.

Chances are that it is the inverter in the lcd that is bad, not the Cathode(s). Anyway the parts for these make them a toss in many cases. I mean you can get a new 17 inch lcd for 150 bucks and it will have a faster responce and better colors. If it was a bigger screen(I had to replace a cathode in a 23 inch apple screen) I would say go for it but for that a new one is just a good idea.

Guys, thanks...scrapped it and ordered a new 19" WS for the wife...she'll be happy.
