Backing up vsphere 6 free edition? I see that veeam is free but it doesn't work with the free version of esxi.

Veeam Backup and replication doesn`t support unlicensed (free) ESXi because it requires VMware APIs disabled.
But you can still back individual machines, using Veeam Endpoint Backup Free
