I'm looking for a backup solution so that I can back up certain files on my laptop (not drive images) onto my desktop over the network. I would perfer to back it up via ftp or something that

also, for backing up, is it better to have the backup files as some format that a 3rd party chooses (a big image or something) or a copy of the files (ie, the same as copy and paste in explorer)?

I have used SmartSync Pro for several years and have been quite happy with it. I installed it on my server and set it to reach out and backup folders on different desktops each night. It has worked great and was fairly easy to learn how to use. The one or two time I have had a support question I have usually received an email response within minutes (even at 3am on a Saturday). It was not very expensive for what I have gotten out of it. I would suggest you give it a look.
