Backing up large RAID system. How to do it fast?

I posted previously about my 2TB raid system. I purchased enough HDDs to back everything up. Now I just need to figure out the best way to do it. My choices are:

1. build a cheap file server (NAS) out of a spare computer and back up my RAID system to this home made NAS over GigE. For the NAS, I can use an old P3 with 512 MB of RAM. I would have to buy a SATA card for it. The MB is old - hope it isn't so old that there are compatibility issues. I have a spare Alacritech Gigabit NIC, so the CPU won't limit the ethernet speeds.

2. Get some USB disk enclosures, put my new drives in them, and hook those up to my RAID system and backup directly over USB.

3. Use an older model TeraStation - I tried this and it was very, very slow, even when connected over a GigE network (through a high-end Netgear switch and Cat6E cable).

My RAID system uses a Tyan S2720 MB, so it doesn't have SATA onboard. I have an Areca 1120 RAID controller for 8 drives. I don't have any way to plug more drives directly into the system (other than USB or GigE). How much faster would it be, if any, if the drives were directly connected?

My RAID system also doesn't have firewire. I hope it doesn't take 2 days to back up 2TB.

I appreciate any advice.
