My windows has been acting screwy, and I just spend the last 9 hours trying to get windows working without formatting. I am going to go back and do I format on my windows drive to clean it up, but I want to back it up first that way I have access to game saves, apps, homework, videos, photoshop images, ect. It would be a pain in the ass to find each thing I need and back it up, much easir to back up the whole drive (i have a 120GB HD with nothing on it anyways). I wanted to know, would it work to just copy the root of the drive to the other one, or will i get crap about files cant be moved coz there open..yadda yadda yadda. Is there a (free) program out there that will do a byte for byte copy of my drive? Also, will having the windowns intall backed up cause issuse with reinstalling ( after the C: drive had windows on it again, and all my stuff I needed put back, I would format the 120GB).

You need to use Ghost to do something like this.

But, if you delete XP (i.e. format) you will lose your registry, meaning you will have to reinstall most of those games you copy over because otherwise they will not be in teh registry and won't start up, same for all your apps.

If you are just wanting to copy your saved games, you should just do them by game into a new temp folder or something, imaging the whole Hard Drive is going to be waste, especially if you are going to image a bad image anyway, that is why you are reformatting right?

Yeah, I know I have to reinstall, I just want the saves and other crap. Like I said in my first post tho, it would be a pain to find all the right save files, as well as all my PS stuff...also every time I format, I ALWAYS forget to back up something I need. And Yeah, my computer has been freezing like crazy laightly...I will keep it runnnig how it is till the next freeze, then im formatting. And yea I would be copying a bad image, but after I format the frist drive, and get everything I need off the 2nd drive, I would go back and format that too.
