Backing up a Raid-0 array on a regular hard drive?

Hey,

I currently have a Raid 0 array of 2x SATA 36 GB Raptors as my primary OS Drive. I just recently got ahold of a 160gb external USB hard drive. I'm planning to buy another 300gb internal hard drive, so I don't need the 160gb hard drive all that much, and I figured I would use it to keep a constant backup of my Raid 0 array.

I was wondering if there is anything special I have to do to image my raid 0 array so I can restore it later (to the same mobo/drives/controller) in case of a HD failure? Do I just run Norton Ghost or Acronis TrueImage and make an image and store it on that hd? Then I can restore it later if my drives ever die?

Also, if I were to do this weekly, is either program (Ghost or TrueImage) smart enough to figure out only which files have CHANGED during the week and update the image accordingly, or do I have to reimage the whole array everytime? I think I remember it being able to update images, but not sure..

I know it is a real pain to clone a single drive onto a raid 0 array ( I spent a week trying to do it), but is it a problem to clone a raid 0 array and restore it later on that same array?

you can back up your raid using Ghost as long as your boot drive has the raid drivers on it. it took me a while to get a properly configured one for the old Dell boxes we had when i was doing server backup stuff. I finally made a boot cd with the scsi raid drivers and the nic drivers on it, and then added a copy of ghost. worked fine for making the .gho files and storing them on the network, should be the same as storing them on the 160 as long as it's formatted and i guess your boot disk would also need ntfsdos on it.

so yes, it's possible, you'll need
raid drivers
read / write drivers for the 160 depending on how it's formatted.
and ghost.

Well right now I'm using the Raid0 array as my primary drive, so yea it has the raid drivers on it (had to install them to install Windows). So I can just go ahead and use the normal ghost features to back up the array and everything should work fine in case I need to restore in the future?

Also, does ghost allow me to update the image without reimaging the whole drive? Like if I do this weekly, will Ghost update only the files which have changed that week in the Image, or will it reimage the whole drive?

technically Ghost doesnt officially support imaging RAID arrays
though it often works on the simple levels (non-parity or nested) RAID0 is a simple level

Successfully imaging a RAID drive is dependent on the specific computer model, driver controller, hard drive, and RAID implementation. Symantec does not provide support for the following information.

and no, it doesnt do incremental backups for that
