Backblaze HD Reliability Stats Q3 2015

Looks like Seagate stepped it up.

Not that bad, when you compare them from their aggressive pricepoint.

interesting that the HGST drives did so well, I may have to rethink my next NAS drive purchase and try them out over the WD Reds.

They are the reason my last 2 drives have been HGST.
One is external 4TB lower RPM for backups (nearly 3 yrs old now), the other internal 4TB 7200rpm NAS.

But...
Some people report that the 4TB NAS is noisy and I found with it on my bench that it did make vibration noises.
However when mounted loose in my case I cannot hear it even slightly in a very near silent build with drives running 24/7 so I dont have spin up times (which is why I bought the NAS version).
ymmv.

The best was the 1.5TB seagate greens with the 150% failure rates.. which means even the replacements failed fast and I thought the 3TB seagates had high failure rates. Over all it looks like the rest of them have more acceptable under 10% failure rates.. I would pay extra and go for the under 5% since it would cost me a lot to ship it for service and also my dats is worth the extra 20% in costs. Although that still does not mean I wont lose data. But if I am getting a backup drive for a backup drive then well I would also go for the cheapest drive. But other wise pay the extra and hope you are not in the 5%.

Based off of this I may want to go pick up some more toshiba 5tb drives.

I was concerned at the Q2 reports of > 7% failure of these but that was obviously just a bad quarter and with a small sample the margin of error is large.

After working in consumer IT for years and selling various HDDs, I would NEVER recommend a Seagate drive. HGST is the way to go.

Any 4 TB drive you would recommend guys?

In another forum they recommended me this

Down here they recommended me this one

The latter is quite expensive for my pocket.

I won't be punishing the drive and I will have a mirror of those 4 TB's in an off site server .This does not mean reliability is not a concern )

as everyone is aware I am a fan of the toshibas because they work and are cheap. just nab the 5TB toshibas since they are cheap cheap ATM

I say if you are going Toshiba wait a week or 2 for the 5TB model to be on sale for $140. Or check B&H photo. No sense paying more for the 4TB model than you will for the 5TB drive.

Edit: B&H has the 5TB for $140 and the 4TB for $120 both with free shipping.

Thank you. Can these be picked up personally in Florida?

This image is quite scary!

B&H is in NY so no.

Not that scary for Hitachi / HGST. They usually have a < 2% annual failure rate in these reports.

However with any storage media (regardless of what you pay for it or who makes it or how much you use it),there is always a chance of failure.

No one seems to make a big deal out of this but the 5TB toshibas have a latency of under 11ms while the seagates are closer to 18ms.. Forget the fact that the toshiba is also one of the fastest hard drives out there with R/W over 220MB/sec.. I remember we had to pay double and more to get drives with lower latencies. This is one area seagate cheapened out on, using cheaper actuators that are far slower. But it only makes a difference if you are using the hard drive as the primary boot drive.
.

Backblaze.. reports Seagate as the worst drive, and yet keeps buying them..............

Flawed report... NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

break it down to a 1:1 volume and Seagates don't seem so bad...

its based on percentage so it isn't flawed, in fact that means the drives they bought the most of is the most accurate part of the report.

having 50% of 1000 drives go bad is way more informative than %50 of 2 drives

You are also looking at the report different from how most people here are.

Backblaze looks at it as,cost of drive vs lifetime. They have the man power and time to replace and monitor failed drives.

Most people here, they don't want to bother replacing a drive or two, every year, as some will fail earily, some later, and most at the end, they want to set and forget. So they don't mind paying more more to get something that is less hassle.
