Haven't owned an Intel processor in my desktop since I sold my circa 2001 Dell Dimension 8100 last year with it's blazingly fast first gen Pentium 4 at 1.3 ghz.

In the past month, I've gone from an AMD Phenom 9850 that I did a build around last year, to a 1090T when I found out it fit my AM2+ motherboard. Running pretty similar setup to a buddy of mine with exception to his video card and i7 950 and ram. We benchmarked our processors only on Passmark to compare at the same speeds, and he was flat out killing me.

I live near enough to a microcenter that I couldn't resist going and getting an i7 950 for myself. Just paid for RAM tonight and only need to snag the motherboard I want (Asus Rampage III GENE) and I'll be off and running. And I can't wait. Initially when I built my computer last year (my first build) I was intent on going Intel then, but a combo deal for the 9850 and motherboard presented itself and I couldn't say no. So now I consider to be moving to where I originally wanted to be anyway..........

Overclocking to come! Can't wait!

I was on the AMD side for many years myself but my last 2 computer purchases were Intel because in both occasions the processor I purchased AMD did not have any chip that was equivalent. I mean in November of 2008 I bought a core2quad Q9550 that was certainly faster than everything AMD had for months. Same goes for my i7 920 purchase in April of this year.

My exact reason too. I thought the 1090T would perform better, but I see the light. :D

My buddy made an interesting note though. Back when the AMD processors were king of the hill a few years ago, they were constantly changing sockets and Intel was sticking with far fewer socket changes. Now Intel is on top and changing sockets every month it seems like, and AMD is making it's new stuff backwards compatible one socket. Just an odd observance I guess, but thought provoking none the less.

Intel needs to find a way to get Mobo Manufacturers happy with them, New Sockets is a great way to force upgrades for all of us nerds. LOL

Intel gets money out of that as well since they make the only chipset for their chips now. Although I guess AMD makes the only chipset for their CPUs now as well.

amd can perform similarly for encoding tasks, however, intel beats them by a ton when it comes to gaming. Most benchmarks show a 20 fps difference between amd and intel chips
