I just built a gaming build, now I need recommendations for games and a controller.
Q6600 @ 3.2ghz,8gb RAM, GTX 260 ...

My old PC favorites:
RTS: Warcraft 2, Starcraft, Age of Empires, Total Annialation
FPS: UT Series, Doom/Quake Series, ...
MMORPG: WoW
Racing: Need 4 Speed Series, Nascar Series
Turn Based RPG: Heroes of Might and Magic, Worms (lol, I remember almost passing out laughing with worms)

I am looking to get atleast 1 game from each category, except maybe MMORPG.

Controller/Gamepad: For the FPS games mostly. Any recommendations?

fps: cod4, cod5 waw, half life 2, counter-strike 1.6/source, portal, tf2, bioshock
gamepad: the keyboard and mouse! How could you use a gamepad for fps?
rts: starcraft still has the cake.

World in Conflict is a great new RTS. still has a pretty active online comunity too. Give it a shot.

Aside from that COD4 was epic, COD5 looks like more of the same (cept we're back to WWII).

The orange box, at $50 is a great value, but the most replayable part is definatly TF2 which is a blast. You can get it on steam for $10. http://store.steampowered.com/app/440/

For RTS game, Company of Heroes is a very nice game. I'm a huge starcraft fan, but for something more modern I think company of heroes is pretty good. There's also (dated) Warcraft 3.

In the other categories, getting what the others mentioned seems like a good start.

'Left4Dead' is VERY addictive, but not worth $50. (I got it for $29.99)
'Fallout 3' is great.
'Orange Box >>Team Fortress 2'. everything else is extra. and worth it. (still the best deal EVER, for "one game")
'ET:Quake Wars' is fun, but I havent played in a while... (too much L4D) You can find this one REAL cheap.
'Bioshock' is also great.
'Race 07 or GTR Evolution Complete' (which is the expansion pack for Race 07, but comes with both for a higher price)
'GRID' is an arcade style GTR racer. Very fun.
'Pure' is a surprisingly fun ATV race game, with horrid loading.

If you like race games, you must own some variant of Race 07. Its incredible. You'll never play a Nascar game again. I highly recommend GRID, as well.

Orange Box should be number 1 on your list though. The amount of enjoyment and value, you will get out of this one box, is completely unheard of. (Especially if you never played Half life 2)

+1 for Total Annihilation, definitely my fav RTS until Company of Heroes came along which is by far the best RTS ever made imo (yes that includes Starcraft and War3).

CS:S for online shooters, TF2 if you are into class based stuff.

MMOs not called WoW all suck except EVE Online which is very very hardcore but it's like no other game in the world.

Turnbased RPGs are almost extinct by I'm hearing very good things about King's Bounty (very similar to Heroes of Might and Magic) and I'm downloading the demo right now.

In terms of a controller, I use a wired Xbox 360 gamepad and it works great. I only use it for platformers and console-esque games, like Devil May Cry 4 or Prince of Persia. I would recommend it for sure.

You can get the first STALKER game for less than $10 on go gamer . com right now in the 48 hour madness deal.

I built a new rig in February after 4 years of the same computer and have bought a bunch of games since to catch up. The best are as follows

1) Orange Box (HL2 + Episodes, Portal, Team Fortress 2)
2) STALKER
3) Call of Duty 4
4) Crysis
5) Dawn of War (plus expansions...Platinum edition with first 2 expansions is cheap and I heard the latest pack sucked...Soulstorm I think it's called)

I also bought Far Cry 2...worth it for less than $20 and I got Bioshock for $10 but haven't touched it yet.

That's more than enough gaming to last a while.

not to mention zombie nazi's!

Grr, do you even fuckin know what you are talking about? Zombies is a seperate mode FOR COOP ONLY!!!! You do not have to play it, yet it is really fund with your friends. It adds so much fun to the game, it is unreal.

MMO? Anarchy Online, it's hardcore to the bones :D

Keyboard and mouse of course. If you must use pad in fps games, get a console, pads come bundled.

FPS: Orange box / Left 4 Dead
RTS: Warcraft 3 + expansion or wait for Starcraft 2
Racing: Dirt
TB RGP: Kings bounty (similar to heroes)

As mentioned above you should give World in Conflict a try for your RTS needs. An amazing jaw dropping game visually. Should run like butter on that system. Fun to LAN with friends or go online.

I'll also second the Company of Heroes suggestion.

The Xbox360 wired controller is my personal favourite controller... though I might be biased since I own a 360 as well.

check out the valve deal if they still have it.

controller = 360 controller for sure.

As others have already said:

You must purchase Orange Box - It is definitely worth it: Portal and TF2 are my favorites
Bioshock was also a great game, and Crysis will be worth seeing on your new rig.

Xbox360 controllers work with a lot of games, just check the steam page for controller support. I use a $20 wireless usb dongle that allows me to use wireless xbox 360 controllers--though I can't aim at all with a controller. I mainly use the controller for GTA4.

I use the controller in games with broken mouse support, like Bioshock, and of course in games that work best with one.

whats wrong with a mouse in bioshock? only problem i found was high sensitivity at 1, so i edited the .ini and put it at .65 ...

BioShock has some issues with mouse acceleration. The patch improved the situation somewhat, but not for mouse purists (like me).

Odds are that unless acceleration drives you bugshit, you'll be okay to play through BioShock.

For RTS: Company of Heroes, WH40k Dawn of War, Sins of a Solar Empire, and World in Conflict.

For Turn/RTS: Rome Total War, Medieval 2 Total War, and coming soon Empire Total War.

Turn based strategy: Galactic Civilizations 2
