So I'm sortof dumbfounded by what has happend to me over the last few days dealing with Dell. I placed an order online that never materialized and they had no record of except for my dell credit account, tried to place a new one by phone and even after going over what I wanted several times, the wrong thing was ordered and a whole new order was also appeared that I did not even place! Needless to say I am looking for other options. I just do not see how Dell is functioning with their complete outsourced model. Anyway......

I was going to get the 1905FP, so I am looking for something simliar. I need a panel that will work well for graphic design and photography but I also do not want to spend much more than the dell goes for.

Any suggestions?

If your doing graphic design and photography why not just get a CRT? A cheap CRT is better than just about any expensive LCD when it comes to graphics/photography. My brother in law is a photographer and he always uses a Dell Trinitron over his Samsung 930B.

I use an apple cinema display at work, I see no problems using LCD's for design and photography, it is fastly becoming the standard. I love the cinema display however I need something with mutilple imput for home use which the apple does not. I have several computers at home, mac, pc and need to switch back and forth.

The ViewSonic VP930 is looking like a good choice but slightly more than I want to spend.

Kind of off topic but I found your bad expeience interesting because I just had a great Dell experience. Ordered a 2405 on Friday, and got it yesterday (free shipping nonetheless)...

why not get one of these 20" widescreens (acer AL2032WA - 20" Wide)

http://www.acer.co.uk/public/acereu...m=UK&LanguageISOCtxParam=en&crc=919154368.htm

just got mine today to replace a dell 2005fpw with terrible backlight bleed. it P*sses all over the dell. Picture is fantatstic and has loads of connections and comes with all the cables too. It also looks alot sexier than in the picture

see this review http://www.pcpro.co.uk/labs/84860/acer-al2032wa.html

by the way, i've seen the phillips 20" in the same lab test and this ones much better and worth the extra cash

I think part of the issue was they are discontinuing the 1905FP, however they don't seem to have a system in place to deal with orders for items the are getting rid of. I'm sure that accounted for part of lapse in my order. But besides the bad service, they now do not have a model that fits my needs. The replacement 1907 is a TN panel from what I understand, which is not good for my needs.

The Acer AL2032WA is an interesting suggestion. So far I have the ViewSonic VP930 and that on my list.

heres a good thread with some pics. I spent ages deciding which monitor to go for and am really pleased I got this one

I've decided to go with the ViewSonic VP930, it is a lot more than the Dell 1905FP I was considering but the specs are certainly better 1000:1 contrast. The Acer does look really nice but I dont want a display with speakers built in and I need to get 2 displays, so I dont want the extra bulk.

Any last objection or suggestion before I purcahse 2 ViewSonic VP930s.

Thanks!

It is NOT faslty becoming the standard - at least not for any professionals - LCD can not replicate as many colors, or black blacks like a CRT can, this has always been the downfall of LCD's - this is changing, but an LCD is not close to a good CRT even today.

So if you are a serious designer / photographer, you will get a CRT.

Have you visited many design studios or ad agencies? Perhaps professional photographers still use CRT's but I haven't been to a design studio in recent time that wasn't using flat panels.

Yhea, a lot of design studios and other photography places are switching to LCDs… but not because of quality. Mainly it’s because it looks cooler when you are working with the customers. After all, most average non-computer types see a CRT and think that the place is about to go under and can’t afford a nice shiny new LCD.
The real professional places still keep all of the CRTs in the back to do the actual work on, and only use LCD’s when they need to show things to customers.
When searching for a photography studio to do my wedding, I always asked to see their setup and automatically disqualified anyone who did the actual editing and picture selection on an LCD.
Basically, I have no respect for any serious photographers who do their work on LCDs. Sure, they might be ok for a hobbyist, but if it is your profession, you should be using a CRT. BTW, apple displays are a RIP OFF, poor quality, and use nonstandard plugs. I have known many people who have had to throw away their old cinema displays because of a simple broken cable. Apple really needs to stick to iPods.

Sorry to hear that the Dell monitor of your choice is no longer available. I work for a Dell campus retailer and have dealt with a lot of Dell idiots on the phone. However, nearly all problems can be solved by simply standing your ground and talking to the manager. In the end, they have ALWAYS made things right for me and my customers.

Yes, then Dell puts their name on them.

Ah, so like the same way that Gateway does... I have an old 15" CRT from Gateway 2000 thats a trinitron and it ROCKS i still use it on my old gaming rig.

I don't agree with that at all. I work in a design studio and have been to many, including a huge in-house design department for a major cable network. Guess what they used, Apple Cinema Displays, tons of them. To say studios use LCD's because it's cool is foolish. No one would risk work quality to look cool...business don't survive looking cool. LCD's can produce results so firms can produce results. Apple would not have switched to all LCD's if they felt the design community (which is a large base for them) would not be able to use them. It's pretty simple.

CRT vs. LCD can be debated forever and I by no means am saying LCD's are better, they aren't. However they are common place and being implimented everywhere.

I love my cinema display and do not know a single designer who doesn't. If it had dual imputs I would have got one without a doubt.

If they aren’t switching to LCDs to look cool, then why are they switching? Maybe to save space, but I don’t buy that since they had space for the original CRT.
I agree that LCDs work for photo stuff… but CRTs work better. Why would you toss a superior CRT in the garbage and spend thousands of dollars to replace it with an overpriced Apple LCD unless it was just for the cool factor?
And even if you do have to have LCD (maybe energy savings?), why would you spend the extra for the cinema display when you could get a Dell 2405 for much less? Once again I think it has to do with the cool factor.
