b0rked laptop...thoughts?

I'm replacing a customer's Compaq Armada 1750 laptop. P2 era, unknown speed, unknown RAM, 6.5gb hdd, CD-ROM, floppy, etc. It's b0rked.


I'm buying him an Acer TM4021& USB flash drive for roughly $900...minus a $100 MIR. I get the MIR to contend with.

Additionally, I'm getting the 1750 as payment for the labor involved in swapping hdd data, and setting up the new system.


I'd like to get the 1750 working....but here is the problem:

When you power it on, all the lights come on. HDD light, all the lock keys, etc. But there's no activity on the monitor.

I didn't have time to give it a thorough check, as it was during my lunch break...so I'm not honestly sure if anything spun up. I don't know if the video works through the VGA port...but those lights coming on and staying on makes me think it might not be as easy as an inverter going out.

Any thoughts on what it might be?
 
ok...now that I have it back in my hands...here's what more I can tell you.

HDD, caps, scrol, num lock stay on.
System powers on when battery is plugged in, or when plugged into a wall. only way to power off is to remove the power source.
no fans turn on.
system makes noise, so it's not dead in the water...it just won't complete a post or display on VGA or the LCD
 
Sounds like a bad power controller on the board, maybe a bad processor but I am thinking that either the PMU or MB may have to be replaced.

CPU's can cause that but... well if its in a socket give it a run with a dif. processor but being a P2.... I think its soldered to the board.
 
I think this is a socketed model, as there is info online about dropping in P3s.


At any rate, it's likely more costly and trouble to repair/replace than it's worth...I'll strip it for parts for ebay.

I figure a 128mb PC66 stick of Crucial and a working LCD might be worth posting up there if I can't figure this thing out..
