Azureus turns off when macbook goes into screensaver?

Just noticed this: I am downloading a torrent using azureus with decent speed. my screensaver goes on and my macbook screen turns off (because of the power settings, however, my macbook does not sleep). When i hit the keyboard to exit out of my screensaver, i look at azureus and the transfer rate is extremely slow but it immediately goes back to the decent speed that i first noticed it at.

the question is, does the airport card go onto a standby mode? is there such a power feature for the wireless on a macbook? any other suggestions as to why azureus does that?
