Hm. It seems I can't afford S939 processors. It seems like I could only afford the A64 3000+ S754.

I'd be coming from a Thoroughbred 1700+ running anywhere from stock to 12x200MHz.

Is this a big jump? No dual channel. How long will these processors be around here for? Still seems very expensive. Going to an NF3-250 board. I'd be losing soundstorm, wouldn't I?

Thoughts?

It will be a huge jump! I came from a P4 2.53 ghz and my new A64 3000+ blows it away! I can't believe how much faster it is. I didn't want to spend the extra on socket 939 either! Now I'm glad I didn't

The Athlon 64 3000+ would perform similarly or a little better than your Thoroughbred at 2.4 GHz, 200 MHz FSB frequency. Then again, many people have overclocked their 3000+s to 2.2-2.5GHz, and of course the 3000+ would quickly pull away from the performance level you have been seeing. So I guess it's a matter of whether you will overclock the 3000+ as you did with the 1700+. The lack of dual channel will not be a big deal at all; the gain, if any, is in the 1-5% range.

I'm afraid of parting with SoundStorm. Seems like I will need to move to a soundcard.

nF3-250GB or K8T800?

Also... is there a PCI lock? I'm completely new to the A64 world. My 1700+ is starting to get shaky and I am back to running it stock. So I think I'll move to A64.

Stick with nF3-250GB, pci/agp lock.
Im using neo platinum at 2.46GHz but i would deffinately recommend you GA-ZNF3-250 or K8NSNXP. They were both great overclockers, dont use that neo (fish brand). Wish they were in stock at the time...

Defintely go A64. It is at a good price/performance point now and you will see significant gains in performance...
