The title says it. Actually here's what happened.

My borther-in-laws PC died out yesterday morning. It just wouldn't boot into windows. I actually built him the system, and both drives WERE brand new (Maxtor 80Gb).

So I tried the whole list of commands such as fixboot, fixmbr, chkdsk /r, nothing. The fixboot and fixmbr said it was sucessful, but it didn't work. chkdsk /r would lock up at 25%. I would try to access c:\windows in the command prompt, but it would tell me "Access is denied".

So I simply unhooked the drive, and used his slave (another 80Gb Maxtor) as his master. That worked. I then figured I'd format the drive IN windows. So I tried, and it tells me "Format of this drive did no complete sucessfully".

I CAN access the drive once slaved, but it's EXTREMELY slow. and folders such as WINDOWS, Program Files, or Documents and Settings, it'll either lock up, or tell me "The disk F: is not formatted. Would you like to format now?".

I then threw in speedfan as I knew it had the SMART section. According to Speedfan's SMART, the F drive's fitness is about 50%.

Do you guys think the disk is physically damaged? Or is there a way to format the drive?

Try DBAN or Autoclave to wipe the drive with 0's, then try to repartition/reformat and run smart test again
