Sup all, just got an Onkyo 6300 and set it all up nicely. I was hoping for some plug & play magic to happen once I hooked the HDMI to the 6970 but nope, that'd just be too easy. Apparently you only have to select this and your good to go, except for the part where for me it just says that it's not plugged in.

Catalyst center shows the receiver as a display and for what it's worth shows there is a connection made. I don't know what to make of it since this is my first time with surround, my HDTV is hooked via a DVI/HDMI if that could lead to a problem.

I really have no idea what software or settings need to be changed. I'd greatly appreciate any help you give so I can watch and play stuff in 7.1.
 
Are you outputting a video signal to the Onkyo in Windows?

You need to either be cloning your display to the Onkyo or extending it.

Only when you are sending a video signal will the audio work. You cannot send audio alone via HDMI.

I do see the AMD HDMI Output show up but it says it's not plugged in for some reason. Is it really that I'm not outputting a video signal to the Onkyo? The receiver shows up in CCC as a display but it won't let me duplicate or extend the display. Maybe my setup is wrong.

Right now my HDTV is hooked via HDMI to DVI and another HDMI from the receiver to the HDMI port on the GPU. I would have a monitor now hooked via DVI-D but I'm in the process of ordering one at the moment. Does the receiver have to be connected to a display in order for this to work?
 
This is how your setup should look like:

HTPC via Radeon 6970 HDMI -> Onkyo receiver HDMI Output -> TV

You may have to update your high definition audio driver on the video card. You also need to disable all stock soundcards on your HTPC. Also make sure within window, your sound properties is set to 2.1 speakers.

This setup will work with Total Media Cinema playing a BD and should bitstream.

Now if you are trying to play something like MKVs with high defenition audio and want to butstream that,

you'll need to configure FFDshow audio coder:

Click on output -> and under pass-through (S/pdif, HDMI) click on Dolby digital, DTS, Dolby Digital Plus, DTS-HD and Dolby True HD. click okay to save... play the movie and you should see your digital steam pass through to your receiver (i.e. DTS etc.)
