avoiding games w/ multiplayer subscriptions

I've been looking for a new multiplayer game to get into, but many of the recent releases that look any good require a subscription in order to play multiplayer. Does anyone know of upcoming games, or recently released games that don't charge for multiplayer membership? I know World of Warcraft is going to charge, and Star Wars Galaxies is already charging for membership... any games like those that don't? I'm a big starcraft, warcraft, and star wars fan, by the way...

there's no MMORPGs that are free, or the one's that are "free" aren't really worth playing, imo.

Guild Wars debuted at E3 and will be free to play, but it's not your traditional MMORPG.

Look at the monthy cost this way. At $15 a month, it's cheaper than seeing two movies a month, or going out to dinner once, or a night out at the bar. Plus you generally spend more time with the MMORPG than all the others combined.

Anyways, pay to play for MMORPG's seems to be the way of the world, and I don't see it changing anytime soon.

Now if you are talking about single player games that support multi-player, there's tons that are free. D2, Warcraft III, Rise of Nations, Halo, UT2k4, BF1942, etc. etc.

i agree with you totally, i absolutely hate subscriptions unless they are like $5 a month or something nice like that, but if you have to buy the game and then pay for it more, i think that is lameo.... ill stick to my ut2k4 and bf1942 thank you very much.. i have been looking into guildwars also tho and played the demo of it during e3, its pretty rad

Just from looking at the guildwars site, it looks pretty cool... maybe I'll go with that

thanks for the advice

If you're really a fan ... then $15 a month is nothing. You won't regret it.

I would also have to say Neverwinter Nights, it has been out for a while but bioware has released two expansions and still have a live team working on updates, bugs and fixes. The only hard part is finding a good module to play on, but it all depends on what you like

Never Winter Nights, Warcraft 3, and UT2004 are the main multiplayer games I play right now depending on my mood and who's around to play.

I did play Everquest for almost 5 years and plan to play World of Warcraft when it comes. The fee isn't for the game. It's for the new content they add, the support crew, and the online servers that you play on. To me it's cheap entertainment and I don't mind paying the $10-15 a month fee.
